This guys were just trying to do their jobs, but were being hounded by investigators. How were they supposed to get their work done while being harassed?

Science has gotten so sloppy these guys really don’t see anything wrong with it.
I think they think that scientists are more knowledgeable than them, therefore it’s ok to keep stuff secret, even if they’re being paid with public money.
It’s not like this stuff is of national security; if anything, it should be way more public than it is now.
