And they said that only 100 bombs could wipe out civilisation!

  1. Latitude says:

So what they are saying is the bomb was not that big of a deal after all………….

  2. nigelf says:

Every time Romm opens his mouth it helps our side immensely.

    • PhilJourdan says:

I actually feel kind of sorry for him. The sheer stupidity of his zealousness is embarrassing, and yet he is not smart enough to even realize how stupid he looks.

  3. Bruce says:

About the equivalent of an extra couple of minutes of bright sunshine per day considering that can add 1000W/sqm (depending on time of year, time of day, lat/long).

  4. Grumpy Grampy ;) says:

Little Joey is still taking his Happy Pills, I see!

  5. R. de Haan says:

36.5 billion nuclear bombs per century should serve Romm with a straight jacket and a permanent residence in a closed department of a mental institution.

I think you are on to something.

Question: is there a criteria for having a person committed based on their online babblings?
Maybe in some of the more “liberal” states?

What a favor we would be doing the planet, to have Romm locked up for his own
      protection!

Half a billion Hiroshimas per year?!?
I think the Hiroshima analogy shows how out of balance Joe Romm and his team of fools and incompetents really are.
Note- one Hiroshima bomb explosion is abbreviated as 1 Hi.

Wiki gives Hiroshima yield to be 1 Hi = 15 kTon TNT, or 1 Hi = 62 TJ of energy.
    5×10^8 Hi/yr at 62 TJ each gives 3.1×10^10 TJ/yr.
1 year = 3.155×10^7 seconds, so this is about 985 TJ/sec = 983 TW uniformly over the surface of the globe.
    Spread over Earth’s surface area of 4*pi*(6,371,000)^2 = 5.1×10^14 m^2, this gives
    a forcing of 983×10^15/5.1×10^14 = 1928 W/m^2.
Seems a bit high. Like a factor of 1000. Close enough for cosmology.
But clearly its right if Joe Romm cites it.
    Onwards into the fog.

Since this is CO2 equivalent downwelling IR, the surface albedo = 1, and along with (0.7*1365/4)= 240 W/m^2 of solar, gives an estimated BB surface Temp of T= +169 C. Of course, this is an average surface temperature, and there will be locations that are obviously much hotter.

No wonder Joe Romm is out if his mind screaming about CO2!
Its so hot most weather station temperature sensors are pegged!
    The oceans are boiling away!
Absolute atmospheric pressure is super-exponentially increasing!
    Its the Venus syndrome!
Run to Danny Bloom’s Arctic cities!

    • Well parsed. I would have just said that Joe Romm is an intolerable putz, but the maths really puts a fine point on it.

    • glacierman says:

You have pegged it. Most rational thinking people with any scientific competence would look at this and realize that they have got to have something wrong. If he was right, it would be so hot we would already be cooked.

    • M. Sandiford says:

In fact, since 983 TW = 983×10^12 W (and not 983×10^15 W as implied above), I think you will find that the 1000 factor is your error.

  7. Me says:

Only in Romms head, or did he have a stroke.

  8. kramer says:

Something tells me that if we set off 1 million Hiroshima sized bombs every day all over the globe, it would be a lot different than what we are seeing now on Earth.

  9. Thank the authors write, the share great is perfect.

  10. Amino Acids in Meteorites says:

So the bigger the lie the more people will believe it?

Some of these people on the political left have no conscience or morals.

  11. Whatever happened to the concept of “Nuclear Winter” due to the dust thrown up?
