Good old Scoop Jackson. Your article reminded me of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_Air_Lines_Flight_007, which Jackson strongly condemned just prior to his death from an aortic aneurysm.
The shoot-down of KAL007 led to one of the most memorable quotes ever spoken at the UN: “The members of the US mission to the United Nations will be down at the dockside waving you a fond farewell as you sail off into the sunset.” – Charles Lichtenstein, in response to the Soviets threatening to leave the UN after being confronted with overwhelming evidence that they were responsible for the deaths of 279 civilians, including US Congressman Lawrence McDonald.
