Meanwhile, it looks like about 4 years difference between them thinking there’s mostly cooling and “confirming” decades of warming. Someone’s been at their dictionary, swapping it with “contradicting”
West Antarctica is warming, possibly due to ocean circulation changes, and to a much lesser degree, underwater volcanism in that region. The rest of the continent has been cooling.
The interesting thing about the Nature paper which claimed that Antarctica was warming (by averaging/smearing the West Antarctic warming trend over the whole continent), well, even the authors of the paper acknowledged that most of the warming occurred 50 years prior to the present. The trend for the last 30 years was still that of cooling. But that important little factoid didn’t make it into the media soundbite. 😉

Due to global warming the area of heating has been increased slightly and which will definitely have an impact on ocean level rise.
