Back in the 80’s the Union of Concerned Scientists were endlessly quoted telling the media that missile defense was a technical impossibility. It would be “like shooting a bullet with a bullet’, Reagan was delusional, etc.
It wasn’t just the 1980’s. They tried to kill funding for it several times. The last time was 2007:
