No major hurricanes ( = to or > Cat.3?) landfalls since the Civil War? What about the the late 1800s Galvaston hurricane, the 1938 storm that trashed New England, Katrina, etc? Just curious, and maybe I’m misreading the intent of that statement.

Back in the 1970s, we were all supposed to be terrified of a new Ice Age. At any moment, the glaciers were about to crush Canada and invade the Midwest. How to evacuate Minneapolis and Chicago in time? Was St. Louis far enough south to be safe? The new Ice Age was going to be caused by — yes! — the build up of CO2 in the atmosphere, which would increase cloud cover, which would increase albedo so sunlight was reflected back into space, which would cool the planet and doom the human race. I was in graduate school at the time, studying physical geography, and thought the new Ice Age was a load of rubbish. Whether 40 years ago or today, the CO2 fantasy is an expression of a confused and decadent mainstream Protestant religious sensibility, with an excessive focus on human sinfulness and on the Old Testament God of Wrath who punishes the unfaithful. Most environmentalists are secularists, so they’re not cognizant of their own cultural bias and don’t realize that they’ve merely updated the End of Days, only without the return of Christ in Glory. It’s not for nothing that Al Gore flunked out of divinity school.
