Ice has less to do with air temperature than it does water temperature, wind speed and direction, and wave height. One bad storm can result on one heck of a lot of sea ice ablation this time of year.

The ice begins to melt when it is -20C, and doesn’t start to freeze again until it is -10c. 3rd week in March and 3rd week in Sept. Solstice to Solstice. Storms and length of day control the sea ice in the Arctic.

Yes and then refreezes at a warmer temperature. Duh!
