Is there any wonder why we have the problems that we do? These are not leaders, these are special education student candidates.

    Webster says:

    Definition of ARITHMETIC

a branch of mathematics that deals usually with the nonnegative real numbers including sometimes the transfinite cardinals and with the application of the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to them

“usually with nonnegative real numbers” ??? What have they got against negative numbers? (In fact without them the resultant set isn’t closed under subtraction!) Or, for that matter complex numbers …

Actually, I wouldn’t call arithmetic a branch of mathematics. What most people mean by “arithmetic” consists of algorithms for performing certain operations on numbers. Defining the operations requires ideas from abstract algebra, which is indeed a branch of mathematics.
