James Hansen : ‘This is the last chance’

6/23/2008

“We see a tipping point occurring right before our eyes,” Hansen told the AP before the luncheon. “The Arctic is the first tipping point and it’s occurring exactly the way we said it would.”

Hansen, echoing work by other scientists, said that in five to 10 years, the Arctic will be free of sea ice in the summer.

The alarming loss of sea ice which has grown worse each summer over the past several decades, has taken a sharp turn for the worse: this year the loss is right in the middle, the most resilient part of the ice cover. This could lead to a completely ice-free Arctic Ocean by September.

  1. Just a side note. NOAA’s State of the Climate for November 2013 states this: “The global sea ice extent during November tied as the 12th largest in the 45-year period of record and was the largest since 1998.” http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/

45 year period of record?? Typo??

    • Bill says:

They normally one use since 1979 but because that would make it look like ice is at a very high point, they switched to 1969 so they could say it was only 12th highest.

  2. The thermometer was invented in 1969.

The warming in the 1930’s was just anectodal.

  3. gator69 says:

Adjusting the Arctic to ‘ice free’ is going to be real trick. NASA should seriously consider hiring David Copperfield.

  4. Hugh K says:

Not to worry alarmists….you can always revisit your 1970’s plan to pour soot over the arctic to get rid of that pesky ice.

  5. Rosco says:

Meanwhile we have now forgotten the two crews of the ships stuck in the Antarctic ice melt.

Lead into the trap by know it all climatologists who have now fled leaving the crew of not only their ship of fools but also their rescuers to wait out this ice “melt”.

  6. MrX says:

There’s now multi-year ice in the arctic. But it’ll depend on wind patterns next summer if it doesn’t all get flushed out around Greenland. The location of this ice seems to indicate that more multi-year ice will build up.
