The researchers, journalists and others currently trapped on the Shokalskiy face a different environment from the one encountered by Mawson. In 2013, for the second year in a row, Antarctic sea ice grew to a record extent: the continent’s ice reached more than 19.5m square kilometres (12m square miles) in September. Those sceptical about climate change claim the fate of the Shokalskiy is an embarrassment to scientists worried about global warming. Nay-sayers should not crow too loudly. The world’s changing climate may be altering polar winds, which in turn could be affecting the volume of Antarctic ice. As wind pushes sea ice together, it forces ridging, leading to thicker and longer-lasting ice formations. Stronger winds also drive ice to move more quickly. Antarctica’s blustery weather, and the thicker ice it creates, therefore may be signs of climate change in themselves.
In 2007 winds compressed Arctic ice into a thick mass with record low extent, not record high extent. How stupid are these people?
Thinner ice=global warming
Thicker ice = global warming
therefore, thinner ice=thicker ice
got it. I’m afraid I didn’t understand that earlier
Don’t try. Having their cake and eating it s a warmist specialty. They also claim all the SH ice melts each summer. So the growth in extent and thickness is is not caused by magical wind.
It’s simple mathematics Bob really, A x I =I and B x I =I therefore A=B where I =Infinity and A and B = anything at all.
WUWT commenter clipe: “expedition leader Turney …has set up a carbon capture company.” A JoNova commenter discovered Prof Turney decided to ‘hide/disguise’ his direct involvement by having family, rather than himself, as named shareholders. More details about stock ownership in the linked comment.
The sea ice extent grows and shrinks every year with the seasons, so for the past few months it has been shrinking. When you have two years of record breaking sea ice growth during the Winters, that means you have a lot more ice floating around the place to get swept up by wind.
The important thing is that the IPCC predicted the opposite, and their predictions were wrong. End of story really.
Is this their last resort?

“Fortunately, even if the blizzard conditions continue to thwart air missions a large American icebreaker, the Polar Star, will reach the vessel in approximately ten days, and, just in case, an even bigger Russian one, the Federov, should arrive within a month.”
And so the carbon foot print caused by that fiasco of an expedition grows ever more mightily! And the cost? WOW!
I really have to wonder. How does a ship get caught in drifting sea ice that has Radar, GPS, near real time satellite imagery, the latest forecasts, etc, etc. etc.
How stupid are these people?
That’s a trick question. It has a correlation of 1 with the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. The more CO2, the stupider the Alarmists get!
Aha, the formula then is: (x)CO2 + watermelon = (x)stupid, hmmm, sounds Progressive.
Considering increasing CO2 has the same relationship with vegetable growth rates, I reckon watermelon is a very suitable representative of that variable. I think you’ve stumbled upon the ideal Alarmist Law. We should co-write a paper, have it reviewed by our skeptical peers and then demand government money.
Mental illness is more rampant than I thought.

Looks like they get closer.
Happy New Year
This guy just totally fabricates a Theory about Polar Wind shifts and makes assumptions about the Mawson Voyage … While failing to confront The cold ass conditions this year and NO Temperature change for 17 years….
Alarmists say the Poles are a bell weather… Well… They are… And this year is cold as all he’ll at the Poles…
In addition … Where was this guy with his wind theory and the Arctic?? The Arctic winds periodically break up Arctic Ice and flush it out of the North Pole in a cycle… So
