Experts Say Antarctica Both Gaining And Losing Ice – At The Same Time

Experts say Antarctica has been losing ice over the last twenty years.

Ten years ago, experts said that Antarctica had been gaining ice for the first time in the last 10,000 years.

Climate experts may be completely incompetent at their job, but we can definitely trust them to set tax/economic policy.

  1. Bob Greene says:

I lost interest in the Guardian article when I read “climate change deniers”. Seems that these folks deny any climate change other than AGW. At least it seems that they believe that the climate would be static absent AGW. So how is the denier?

I do deny they have the ability to accurately predict/project future climate or the ability to change and control it.

Canberra Times gets stuck into the IPCC, amongst others. Seems to me the tide is turning in the media, albeit Rupert Murdoch’s part.

“The reality is that the IPCC is in effect little more than a UN-sponsored lobby group, created specifically to investigate and push the ”man-made warming” line.” – John Maclean.

How can you have both? It’s one or the other. Or it’s simply a normal fluctuation isn’t it? The extremes people will go to try and justify their false ideas.

I posted the link to the NASA study that shows that gains of Land-Ice in in the Antarctic region are exceeding losses in response to a climate alarmist crying that it was the land ice sheet that was melting there.

According to NASA’s Land-Ice Study published in 2012, from 1992-2008:

“Mass Gains of the Antarctic Ice Sheet Exceed Losses.”

During 2003 to 2008, the mass gain of the Antarctic ice sheet from snow accumulation exceeded the mass loss from ice discharge by 49 Gt/yr (2.5% of input).

The net gain (86 Gt/yr) over the West Antarctic (WA) and East Antarctic ice sheets (WA and EA) is essentially unchanged from revised results for 1992 to 2001.

    Increases offsetting losses:

…“The recent 90 Gt/yr loss from three DS (Pine Island, Thwaites-Smith, and Marie-Bryd Coast) of WA exceeds the earlier 61 Gt/yr loss, consistent with reports of accelerating ice flow and dynamic thinning.

Similarly, the recent 24 Gt/yr loss from three DS in the Antarctic Peninsula (AP) is consistent with glacier accelerations following breakup of the Larsen B and other ice shelves.

In contrast, net increases in the five other DS of WA and AP and three of the 16 DS in East Antarctica (EA) exceed the increased losses.”

  6. Robert Austin says:

Experts suck and blow at the same time, what else is new. And warmists just suck it up like a line of cocaine through a straw.

  7. Rosco says:

Current observations probably support the 2002 story.

The 2014 story is an attempt to remove the egg.

But notice the superior smug nature of the title – even though the recent “experiment” completely failed in the most spectacular manner possible in SUMMER they still know better than anyone else yet are still prepared to “educate” the simpletons who do not worship the vengeful CO2 god.

A word to alarmists – ice does not MELT until the temperature rises above zero.

Another word to alarmists – even in water which is at temperatures substantially above zero ice bergs survive long enough to drift into shipping lanes whilst retaining enough mass to sink “unsinkable” ships in avoidable collisions.

Sublimation is a whole different kettle of fish but apparently doesn’t directly contribute to rising sea levels until the next rainfall.

  8. Sundance says:

Climate scientists have put every possible claim they can out in public and then only recall the ones that agree with current conditions so they can never be wrong.
