January, 1932 – Lack Of Snow In Upstate New York Threatened The Winter Olympics
This entry was posted in Uncategorized. Bookmark the permalink.
repeat for Vancouver Olympics, Calgary was also warm….I guess they just picked the wrong years….BECAUSE it ain’t GW….
The XIII Olympic Winter Games took place during what the Lake Placid Olympic
Organizing Committee’s (LPOOC) Final Report described as “the worst snow drought to
hit the eastern United States since 1887.” Fortunately, a $5 million permanent snowmaking
system had been put in place at Whiteface Mountain Ski Center.
Same in 1980, saved by snowmaking equipment.
I don’t remember the 1980 Lake Placid winter Olympics being saved so much by snowmaking equipment as by dump trucks bringing in snow for the different venues. It was a disaster for the skiing events.
I also remember driving past Steamboat Springs in the 70’s (not sure which year) and seeing Mt Werner bare as bones of snow. It was this low-snow year that forced the ski areas in Colorado to go to snow making equipment. Now the ski areas regularly open on Thanksgiving when they used to open mid December.
Most likely 1976-1977
Spot on. Your memory is flawless.
The Winter Olympic provides a great metaphor for how all the alarmist rhetoric is toppling over and the truth wins through. In Australia, it’s called “doing a Bradbury.”
First Australian winter Olympic gold medal ever! In my view, nature is doing a Bradbury on all these alarmist arses, and all they can do is make excuses as to why they are wrong and have lost. Enjoy.
