Polar ice cap melting away in 2008 ?The latest salvo comes courtesy of Xinhua, which reports that Olav Orheim, the head of the Norwegian International Polar Year Secretariat, is placing his money on this summer. Noting that its ice sheet had reached a historical low of 3m sq. km last summer – it covered around 7.5m sq. km as recently as 2000 – Orheim told Xinhua that “if Norway’s average temperature this year equals that in 2007, the ice cap in the Arctic will all melt away.” Barring this disaster, Orheim predicted that excess carbon dioxide emissions and higher average temperatures would unpredictably alter the region’s fragile ecosystems. On a separate note, he said that Asia would likely be hardest hit by rising sea levels, estimating that a one meter rise would affect “nearly 100 million people on an area of 800,000 square km in Asia and direct economic loss will amount to 400 billion U.S. dollars.”

While doing research 12 or 13 years ago, I met Jim Hansen, the scientist who in 1988 predicted the greenhouse effect before Congress. I went over to the window with him and looked out on Broadway in New York City and said, “If what you’re saying about the greenhouse effect is true, is anything going to look different down there in 20 years?” He looked for a while and was quiet and didn’t say anything for a couple seconds. Then he said, “Well, there will be more traffic.” I, of course, didn’t think he heard the question right. Then he explained, “The West Side Highway [which runs along the Hudson River] will be under water. And there will be tape across the windows across the street because of high winds. And the same birds won’t be there. The trees in the median strip will change.” Then he said, “There will be more police cars.” Why? “Well, you know what happens to crime when the heat goes up.”
And so far, over the last 10 years, we’ve had 10 of the hottest years on record.
Didn’t he also say that restaurants would have signs in their windows that read, “Water by request only.”
Under the greenhouse effect, extreme weather increases. Depending on where you are in terms of the hydrological cycle, you get more of whatever you’re prone to get. New York can get droughts, the droughts can get more severe and you’ll have signs in restaurants saying “Water by request only.”
When did he say this will happen?
Within 20 or 30 years. And remember we had this conversation in 1988 or 1989.
Does he still believe these things?
Yes, he still believes everything. I talked to him a few months ago and he said he wouldn’t change anything that he said then.
Since “science has spoken”, this must mean the rest of us are now living in some fractured alternate universe where sea levels, temperatures, and climate fluctuations remain about the same. This is truly frightening — how can we get back on track to catastrophic climate change???!!!
But in this ‘fractured alternate universe’ energy costs are to “necessarily skyrocket.”

I think there is a chance that we are entering another “Little Ice Age”. And probably just for one solar cycle, it will still impact us.
30 years after 1988 is 2018, so the Maldives may not actually be submerged for nearly four years yet. However, the people died of thirst long ago /sarc.

So, the Maldives are being inundated? I keep reading that. But I never see before and after pictures. I know the Maldives are a little off the beaten path, but that means that mostly rich people go there to vacation, right? Odd, how none of them have taken their cameras with them to document the inundation. And they must take a lot of money with them to spend in the Maldives. Odd, how none of the resident business owners or government officials have pictures to document the inundation. Very… odd……..
Given that the Maldives have the lowest avg. elevation above sea level,1.5 meters, they are obviously the most fragile land on the planet and subject to minuscule sea level changes. They have been that way for about 2000 years now, with earliest cultures dating back to about 300bc. So any day now, any day now; just you wait and see!. Coral atolls normally grow as sea level rises, but the natives are killing the coral and sealing their own fate.
Let’s do a bit of logic exercise here. Coral grows BELLOW the sea level. How the hell Maldives ended up ABOVE sea level? Is it possible that the sea level actually dropped? Curious indeed…
