Yet another smoking gun that Michael Mann’s hockey stick is junk science, and opposite of reality.

Here’s a nice article, showing that the glaciers have been shrinking in that area for more than 150 years. Some amount of regrowth around 1980, but then back to shrinking again.

    http://www.researchgate.net/publication/259923078_Glaciological_monitoring_in_Hohe_Tauern_National_Park

It’s a closely monitored area, so if we really are moving back into a cooling period, these glaciers should start to show it. In terms of the length of the glacier tongue, it’s one of the areas with a long continuous data set, and the methodology has deliberately been kept consistent.

  2. SMS says:

There are other stories of old mines being uncovered at glaciers retreat. I’ve heard of ancient Roman mines being exposed, similar to the Medieval mines.

We also have the example of Viking agricultural remnants being exposed as the Greenland Ice sheet does some retreating.

Knowing that the climate has been warmer in the past punches a hole in the CAGW myth that massive positive feedbacks will occur as CO2 increases.

  3. Laz M says:

Along the same lines, but somewhat off topic: Steve, I’d love your take on THIS bs I just ran into http://www.vox.com/2014/12/21/7424371/winter-solstice

They say that because of global warming (lol) this was not the shortest day ever.

But, if you read the link they reference on their story http://www.ucolick.org/~sla/leapsecs/dutc.html#lod.png

…it is clear that it is the internal machinations of the earth’s core that are the “mass relocation” they allude to, not “melting ice” … amazing.

I wanted to present them with this story, re: 1939 mines being revealed and your record decadal-ice observations, but they do not allow for comments in their story (lol)

    Try #6
Can I post on this thread?

    • Gail Combs says:

Glaciers do not actually show whether it is hotter or colder since a glacier is a balance between movement and snowfall. A retreat could also mean it is drier not colder.

Record snowfall revives 2,000 Himalayan glaciers

      • MrX says:

Retreat of glaciers can also be due to nearby human activity caused by particulate matter in the air. Or nearby repeated forest fires, etc.

    • Gail Combs says:

Glaciers are also growing in the USA for example on Mt. Shasta California, the Nisqually Glacier on Mt. Rainier, Glaciers on Glacier Peak in northern Washington and Crater Glacier on Mt. Saint Helens is now larger than it was before the 1980 eruption. Glaciers are growing in Alaska for the first time in 250 years including the Juneau Icefield, which covers 1,505 square miles (3,900 sq km) and is the fifth-largest ice field in the Western Hemisphere.

    • Gail Combs says:

Links to a couple papers HERE:
“….A few weeks ago I discussed a paper that demonstrated a new method of studying glaciers that showed the the last 1,000 years in Norway have been the most glacially active of the past 8,000 years. This is certainly what I would expect based on all the scientific evidence of how the Earth’s climate behaves over the longer periods of time.

Now there is a new paper that shows that even over the decade from 1998 to 2008 that a significant percentage of the glaciers in the Himalayas are expanding….”

You will have to search for the article by title: “Himalaya Glaciers are Growing” Top of the paper on google.

Seems someone hates John K*e*hr’s website and is now blocking links to it.
He must be right above the target.

(It took ten tries to get that bit posted.)

  5. MrX says:

The irony of all this is that we’re still in an ice age. The planet still has parts of it covered in ice year round. If we weren’t in an ice age, warnings of warming would perhaps have more impact.

    • Gail Combs says:

We are not only in an Ice age but at the tail end of the Holocene – maybe – with the temperatures ~3C lower than at the Holocene Optimum. If the Holocene follows the same pattern as MIS11 we will stay in an ‘interglacial’ but near the tipping point into glaciation where the climate is cold and rather unstable for thousands of years. If Lisiecki & Raymo are correct, based on ” a 5.3-Myr stack (the ‘‘LR04’’ stack) of benthic d18O records from 57 globally distributed sites aligned by an automated graphic correlation algorithm.” we are looking at possible glaciation. A solar minimum, a Dansgaard-Oeschger type event plus a massive volcanic eruption? Who knows that may be enough to kick our chaotic bistable climate system into the cold stable condition.

No matter how you slice it more CO2 makes a lot of sense since it will help plants grow better under cooler drier conditions. Even if we are looking at a 2C warming (which is bogus) it still only kicks the earth to near the Holocene Optimum. Dansgaard-Oeschger type events have seen temperature changes as much as 10 to 16C over relatively short periods.

      • gregole says:

Yes, it is truly an insane world that thinks that growing glaciers are good (for what precisely are they good for?) and that cursing nice weather is a form of high-minded idealism. How propaganda has worked on the human mind is fascinating to observe.

        • Gail Combs says:

Sea level rise is a heck of a lot better than a glacier mowing down your village or snow burying your village.

Japan is getting buried this year with more snow than they have ever seen – Buildings collapsing, people dead. The cold wave and snow in northern India has killed 30. China, Turkey, Germany, Algeria have had heavy snow and cold as well as other countries in the EU. Canada and the USA have been hit with record cold and snow.

Do we hear a peep about this in the MSM? No we get utter bull patties like the ‘Warmest year EVAH’!

If it gets any warmer we are all going to be under a mile high glacier.

  6. Bloke down the pub says:

Munich correspondent of the British United Press. Did the BUP really have a correspondent in Munich in October 1939? I would have thought they might have been unwelcome at that point in history. Maybe they were allowed in for the beer festival?

    • Gail Combs says:

Could be a German reporter allowed to pass on officially sanctioned information. This is the type of non-political news that would be allowed out along with whatever propaganda the Germans dreamed up. Although you are correct this would be just after war was declared.

      World War II: Timeline

      September 29, 1938
Germany, Italy, Great Britain, and France sign the Munich agreement which forces the Czechoslovak Republic to cede the Sudetenland, including the key Czechoslovak military defense positions, to Nazi Germany….

      September 1, 1939
Germany invades Poland, initiating World War II in Europe.

      September 3, 1939
Honoring their guarantee of Poland’s borders, Great Britain and France declare war on Germany….

  7. Centinel2012 says:

Reblogged this on Centinel2012 and commented:
That can’t be true there were never warm period in the past according to Dr. M. Mann!

  8. ripatheism says:

And thus the ERASED Medieval warm period – the number one choice of fascists dogs is to erase history, then rewrite to support your twisted agendas..
