Hurricane Camille devastated the Gulf Coast on August 17, 1969.
Peak sustained surface winds in Camille were measured at 190 MPH, before the gauge broke. Estimates have it over 200 MPH. CO2 was at very safe levels at the time.

i remember one of those coastal cities in Mississippi recorded 180 mph from the northwest on the “weak” side of the storm!

How about the one-two punch at that time. In 1970 Celia hit and really knocked Corpus Christi for a loop. I went to work there just following and it was bad….but Camille was something else again. (Incidently, the apartments shown were notorious as the place where a “hurricane party” was held. I think there was only one or two durvivors.)
