I had the most incredible day today, cycling, hiking, wine tasting and canoeing in Maryland.
A few weeks ago, I was violently ill and wasn’t sure I was going to make it. I have lost 30 pounds since late June.
Thanks to the grace of God, I have made a full recovery and feel fantastic at my new weight. Cycling up hills is incredibly easy now.
I see everything as a miracle. Every breath, every leaf, every sip of wine. All of our illusions of being in control are arrogant nonsense.

I really have to wonder about belief that everything that we see is just a happy accident. I have had many accidents in my life, and cannot remember any that resulted in creation of anything of real use. But I guess there is nothing really wrong with believing that we are all just ridiculously lucky, literally incredibly lucky.
I’m with you on that Gator. I simply cannot look at the wonders of our earth and universe and believe it all got here by happenstance. For some reason where some people see chaos others of us see complex organization and I don’t understand why. There very miracle of birth is evidence of a creator to me.
I see miraculous layers of organization and synergism in the living world and universe all over. I find it amazing that so many of the things that bring destruction and death also bring forth the conditions needed for new life or in the case of a supernova the very stuff of life as we know it. The death of a giant star which in it’s nuclear oven created the fundamental building blocks of life and then explodes in one of the most powerful forces known in nature there by broadcasting those elements into seemingly lifeless empty space. Or like the giant sequoias who’s relatively tiny cones require a wild fire to open and make their seeds fertile. Or finding complex life in the depths of the ocean where no sunlight penetrates but which subsists on heated elements we always considered a toxic soup which comes forth from the bowels of our earth. Such things are quite miraculous to me.
Climate scientivists have been developing their own miracle machine for a while, with every recent observation forever corrected upwards, and every old data forever corrected downwards 8)

Evil is something that God can allow to happen or prevent, can steer, squelch, or just stand back and not lift a finger. But in no case is He the creator of it, or its author. We can bring about evil, though it’s not always our work, either.
Tony did not specify if his illness was infectious, let alone viral. But even assuming he manufactured his own virus ex nihilo (!?!) and then infected himself with it, that doesn’t rule out his life being saved by the grace of God. Tony was there, Chris wasn’t. On what grounds does he reject Tony’s eyewitness testimony? Answer — he has no valid grounds, but he considers himself free to do so anyway.
He is indeed free to do so in the sense of having the ability, but the main problem is as follows. His entire argument presupposes that the universe has no beginning. If the universe has no beginning, then time is meaningless because periods of time are always measured from a given point of origin. Therefore if time is self-evidently real and not imaginary, then the universe must have a beginning. (This is closely related to Zeno’s paradox.)
And if time were not real, then none of the physical processes we observe, including those of life itself, would be possible.
Therefore, the physical processes that we observe and discuss here at this blog imply a beginning to the universe, which implies an outside power to create the universe, which then in turn opens up the possibility of one’s life being saved by the grace of a loving Creator.
Remember that under commonly accepted rules of logic, we expect that which is more likely and do not expect that which is less likely. The argument against God’s existence is entirely dependent on the spurious notion of a time without boundaries, because without that postulate, the existence of God becomes possible, and once it is accepted to be possible, it is by far the more likely scenario. Therefore, committed Atheists are faced with the daunting task of holding the line at the impossibility of God’s existence, no matter how spurious and untenable such a line may be. For once they have lost that position, it becomes impossible for the honest inquirer to avoid admitting the actual likelihood of God’s existence. Whereupon the debate immediately moves on to His general character and qualities, given the assumption that He exists. And this is a debate which committed Atheists are anxious to avoid, since it eventually leads (through experiment) to personal encounters with a benevolent God, which is what they seek to foreclose.

First of all, that is not a sermon, but an apology. There’s a difference.
Second, I’m not the one disputing Tony’s miraculous healing at the hands of God.
At no point have I stated or suggested that anyone is immune from illness. Quite the contrary! If you understand the Gospel at all, it should be clear to you that the Father was willing to allow His only begotten Son to be bruised for others’ sake. How much more are the rest of us subject to tribulation?
It seems like your objection is to the idea that man is in any measure responsible for the existence of ill fortune in the world. That is a subject that, in its entirety, probably exceeds the scope of this post. But the problem is that some others want to impose their religious view that illness and suffering are just a normal part of life and have nothing to do with evil. Evil is like an infection — it tends to spread and multiply if it is not contained. And we cannot do it ourselves, but require the grace and miraculous works of God to maintain some semblance of normalcy in our lives.
The alternative view is the Atheist one, which holds that nothing is supernatural, and that nature is just as it always has been, with illness, suffering, death, decay, destruction, and a winding-down universe, and that this is entirely normal and good. This is not the kind of universe that God created — merely the one that we’re stuck with right now. And to be clear, we are partly responsible for that state of affairs. Whether you agree or not, the fact is that I was responding to another viewpoint which denies miracles, denies the existence of God, and mocks those who disagree. And I didn’t mock, I just corrected the record. Yet you’re questioning the appropriateness of my expressing my view, and have nothing negative to say about the statement that prompted mine. Then you follow up with your own religious view, which apparently is not something you consider inappropriate to do.
Your line of reasoning might have some basis if you were agreeing with Tony about miraculous healing, and I was not. But the opposite is the case.
Mental and physical health are definitely related. On another blog it was recently noted that scientists may develop PTSD like symptoms on finally realizing the full extent of evil engulfing the world today.
That was definitely true in my life, and I believe that was Arjuna’s problem when he tried to excuse himself from the battle of life in the Bhagavad Gita.
Glad your feeling better Tony. That old adage that says what doesn’t kill you will generally make you stronger really has some truth to it. I’m sure that you’ll make the most of it.

I am sorry to hear about your illness, but happy to see you back in Maryland. It is pretty here, once you get away from the people. The weight loss is good, but not at all the most pleasant way to lose it.

Been there, Tony, in a “slightly” different way. Met my guardian angel in real life, who visited me after that incident. Still struggling to find a church that matches with my religious feelings though, but I do not doubt that God saved me that day and I am thankful for that every day. Live is a miracle indeed.
OT but for those inclined the Perseid meteor shower is upon us. Sky & Telescope says:
“The Perseids should peak late on the night of August 12–13, 2015, and observing conditions this year will be excellent (weather permitting!). No moonlight will brighten the sky.
Furthermore, the shower’s exact peak is predicted to run for several hours centered on 4 a.m. August 13th Eastern Daylight Time (1 a.m. PDT; 8h Universal Time). This coincides perfectly with the best meteor-watching hours — from late evening to the first light of dawn — in the time zones of North America.”
So if your so inclined and have the skies and the time get our your lounger and orient it towards the North East and bring what ever you need to keep warm (I prefer a sleeping bag). Midnight to dawn is the best time for observing about any meteor shower.
Took the pooch out to do her business this morning at 05:50 and in the 4-5 minutes I was out saw two comets. One was a pretty good one.
Cool! Perseid meteors peak on 8/12-13 every year.

We have an even bigger miracle than those comets right here in our home. My 8 month old grand baby (our second grandchild) spent the night with us. She is something to see! Already trying to pull herself up to stand. Already loves music. She’s on stage II food now and we haven’t found a single thing she doesn’t like. Seems to like the squash every bit as much as the banana. Reminds me of a baby bird the way her mouth opens when she sees the spoon on the way. Only woke us up once during the night for a diaper change and then went right back to sleep.
