The North Pole has always suffered from ice-free days. What is the panic all about??? Some Warmists have been spreading lies just to worry people. Shame!

      New York Times – May 18, 1926
Lincoln Ellsworth of the Amundsen-Ellsworth transpolar expedition told The Associated Press here today that he saw much open water at the North Pole when he and his sixteen companions passed over it last Tuesday night in the dirigible Norge.

…..that the attempt of Sir Hubert Wilkins to reach the North Pole by submarine was not a scatter-brained scheme as was sometimes supposed. It was quite feasible for a submarine to travel under the ice to the North Pole which was situated in open water. With good fortune Wilkins would have been able to come to the surface right at the Pole…

      North Pole is the goal
…While the Pole itself doesn’t move, the ice above it does – sometimes there is open water at the site and hitting the exact loca-tion is no easy chore….

Climate Change Has The World Skating On Thin Ice
      by Lester R. Brown

“If any explorers had been hiking to the North Pole this summer, they would have had to swim the last few miles. The discovery of open water at the Pole by an ice-breaker cruise ship in mid August surprised many in the scientific community.”

      New York Times – 29 August 2000
“The fact of having no ice at the pole is not so stunning,” said Dr. Claire L. Parkinson, a climatologist at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. “But the report said the ship encountered an unusual amount of open water all the way up. That is reason for concern.”

      New York Times – 29 August 2000
Correction: August 29, 2000, Tuesday A front-page article on Aug. 19 and a brief report on Aug. 20 in The Week in Review about the sighting of open water at the North Pole misstated the normal conditions of the sea ice there. A clear spot has probably opened at the pole before, scientists say, because about 10 percent of the Arctic Ocean is clear of ice in a typical summer. The reports also referred incompletely to the link between the open water and global warming. The lack of ice at the pole is not necessarily related to global warming.

      10. Is it true that the North Pole is now water?
Recently there have been newspaper articles describing the existence of open water at the North Pole. This situation is infrequent but has been known to occur as the ice is shifted around by winds. In itself, this observation is not meaningful.

Variability in sea-ice thickness over the North Pole from 1977 to 1990
CHANGES in the thickness of polar sea-ice have the potential to provide a signal of climate change, but attempts to identify trends must take into account the range of natural variability. Here we present an analysis of measurements of the subsurface ice thickness (draft) of sea-ice around the North Pole made from 1977 to 1990. These data were collected during six submarine cruises in late April/early May of 1977, 1979, 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1990, and represent the most extensive dataset so far for ice draft in the central Arctic at the same season and location. The results reveal considerable interannual variability both in mean ice draft (±1.0 m) and in open-water extent (±2.5%)……

Firstly, biomarkers indicate that the Arctic was free of sea ice in summer for most of the first 3/4 of the Holocene.

Maybe he means , the first time since the Little Ice Age ?

    • Really? Never heard. That’s very interesting and is probably very good information to spread… Have any links?

      • Gail Combs says:

Ice free Arctic Ocean, an Early Holocene analogue

        Abstract
Extensive systems of wave generated beach ridges along the North Greenland coasts show that these areas once saw seasonally open water. In addition to beach ridges, large amounts of striated boulders in and on the marine sediments from the same period also indicate that the ocean was open enough for ice bergs to drift along the shore and drop their loads. Presently the North Greenland coastline is permanently beleaguered by pack ice, and ice bergs are very rare and locked up in the sea ice. Predictions of the rapidly decreasing sea ice in the Arctic Ocean generally point to this area as the last to become ice free in summer. We therefore suggest that the occurrence of wave generated shores and abundant ice berg dropped boulders indicate that the Arctic Ocean was nearly free of sea ice in the summer at the time when they were formed. The beach ridges occur as isostatically raised “staircases”, and C14-dated curves for relative sea level change show that they were formed in the Early Holocene. A large set of samples of molluscs from beach ridges and marine sediments were collected in the summer of 2007, and are presently being dated to give a precise dating of the ice free interval. Preliminary results indicate that it fell within the interval from c. 8.5 to c. 6 ka – being progressively shorter from south to north. We therefore conclude that for a period in the Early Holocene, probably for a millenium or more, the Arctic Ocean was free of sea ice at least for shorter periods in the summer….

        • Gail Combs says:

The third from the last sentence is:
“A large set of samples of molluscs from beach ridges and marine sediments were collected in the summer of 2007, and are presently being dated to give a precise dating of the ice free interval.”

        • Ted says:

A friend of mine was actually in that expedition. Oddly, she didn’t come back with a great tan, and stories of tropical beaches. All she talked about was the endless, unbroken ice. I guess the north pole melting hadn’t made it that far south yet.

        • Gail Combs says:

She didn’t come back with a great tan, and stories of tropical beaches? What a shame.

Then of course you can just look at Greenland ice core temperatures to realise that it was warmer through most of the first 3/4 of the Holocene.

All the different strands of data say about the same thing.

Here. strait from the ice face

      • AndyG55 says:

ps.. any search for “Fram Strait biomarkers” will lead to a time-consuming read of many papers. (been there done that)

And its amazing how well the analysis links in with the Gisp/Grip Greenland ice data.

Thank God, the North Pole cannot read.
And then they make fun of those guys who told us that 2012 would be the end of the world …

  4. I’m always blown away by the “Arctic Albedo Feedback” crowd that thinks a couple of W/m^2 either way is going to make a huge difference one way or the other. But the effect of having open water vs even very thin ice will emit energy to space at over 160W/m^2 more than ice, even using a very generous downwelling IR, which would depend on cloud cover and humidity. Open water begets ICE when you have cold air above it, there is no way around it.

Open water at the Arctic is an incredibly massive heat gate, it simply could not sustain itself that way for long unless tropical water was finding its way north at a huge rate. Even the reduced ice we’ve seen in the last couple of decades is going the other way, it’s going to cycle back to thick ice, which will reduce heat escape, allow heat to build up in the water as it cycles in from lower latitudes, which will melt the ice, open the floodgate again, and it will release the heat and close again. 160W/m^2 >> 2W/m^2

    • Gail Combs says:

The Alarmists also ignore the fact Antarctic sea ice has been at record highs the last few years and that ice is much closer to the equatior and therefore reflects more solar energy.

…sea ice extents, the “edge” of the Arctic sea is a tiny ring about latitude 78 -82 north in mid-September. The “edge” of Antarctic’s sea ice minimum is also a “ring” – but that ring is about latitude 66 south. Much closer to the equator, much more energy reflected from the Antarctic sea ice, right? Now, at maximum extents, the “edge” Arctic sea ice is at its closest point to the equator is only down to 72 north, not even as close to the equator as the minimum Antarctic sea ice! But at its maximum, Antarctic sea ice extents is much, much higher at 59.2 to 59.0 latitude. Closer to the equator than even the most southern tip of Greenland!
Now, at the equinoxes, when both Arctic and Antarctic are both hit by the same solar intensity, the Antarctic Sea Ice receives between 2x (Feb-March) to 5x (September-October) the energy that the Arctic sea ice receives. Thus, to reflect equal energy into space, the “gain” of even 1.0 Mkm^2 of southern sea ice extents needs to be balanced by a loss 2 to 5 LARGER in the Arctic…. —- RACookPE1978

So now we have sea ice growing in the SH and in the NH and the AMO peaking and heading down as the sun goes sleepy. The Con-Artists must be in a real panic to get their carbon trading/tax through before the sheeple wake up half froze to death.

    Tony-

You’ve become blinded by your ideology. I can tell you from personal experience that Santa hasn’t brought me anything in the last 7 years. He hasn’t even eaten the cookies I left out for him. Obviously there’s something wrong at the north pole.

    THINK OF THE CHILDREN.

    • Gail Combs says:

I saw Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer just recently. Some one stuck him on a road sign. At night his red reflector nose really lights up! (I did a double take when I saw the sign)

      • Dave G says:

Someone needs to call PETA. They would stop Rudolph’s abuse by euthanizing him.

        • Gail Combs says:

Rudolph can join the 88.3 percent–that PETA took into custody and killed within 24 hours in Virgina last year.

          PETA KILLS ANIMALS

PETA’s actual goal is to remove property rights and to reduce humans to the same status as animals so people will have no problem with the Fabian Socialist goals.

Straight from Fabian co-founder George Bernard Shaw

          KILLING THOSE “UNFIT TO LIVE”
“The moment we face it frankly we are driven to the conclusion that the community has a right to put a price on the right to live in it … If people are fit to live, let them live under decent human conditions. If they are not fit to live, kill them in a decent human way. Is it any wonder that some of us are driven to prescribe the lethal chamber as the solution for the hard cases which are at present made the excuse for dragging all the other cases down to their level, and the only solution that will create a sense of full social responsibility in modern populations?”

Source: George Bernard Shaw, Prefaces (London: Constable and Co., 1934), p. 296.

“Under Socialism, you would not be allowed to be poor. You would be forcibly fed, clothed, lodged, taught, and employed whether you liked it or not. If it were discovered that you had not character and industry enough to be worth all this trouble, you might possibly be executed in a kindly manner; but whilst you were permitted to live, you would have to live well.”

George Bernard Shaw: The Intelligent Woman’s Guide to Socialism and Capitalism, 1928, pg. 470)

Sure sounds like the way a farmer treats his livestock.

          And it is working:
Peter Singer’s Bold Defense of Infanticide: Singer is the Decamp Professor of Bio-Ethics at Princeton University. ” In 1979 he wrote,“Human babies are not born self-aware, or capable of grasping that they exist over time. They are not persons”; therefore, “the life of a newborn is of less value than the life of a pig, a dog, or a chimpanzee.””

After-Birth Abortions: College Students Increasingly Support Infanticide “… in interviews that not only do they see more college students willing to say they support post-birth abortion, but some students even suggest children up to 4 or 5-years-old can also be killed, because they are not yet “self aware.”’

Hospitals ‘paid millions to put patients on [Liverpool] death pathway’ “Hospitals are being paid millions of pounds to reach targets for the number of patients put on a controversial pathway for the withdrawal of life-saving treatment, according to data based on Freedom of Information requests.”

This is the type of National ‘Health Care’ the Progressives want to gradually introduce in the USA via Obummercare.

UK Doctor Admits To Starving Babies To Death, Using ‘End-Of-Life’ Care
Bernadette Lloyd, a hospice pediatric nurse, … wrote: “The parents feel coerced, at a very traumatic time, into agreeing that this is correct for their child whom they are told by doctors has only has a few days to live. It is very difficult to predict death. I have seen a ‘reasonable’ number of children recover after being taken off the pathway.”

“I have also seen children die in terrible thirst because fluids are withdrawn from them until they die.”

Lloyd goes on to describe the death of a young cancer patient on a death pathway plan: “I witnessed a 14 year-old boy with cancer die with his tongue stuck to the roof of his mouth when doctors refused to give him liquids by tube. His death was agonist for him, and for us nurses to watch. This is euthanasia by the backdoor.”

One doctor admitted to participating in the starvation death of ten newborns. Death pathway “care” involves withdrawing food and fluid by tube is being used on young patients as well as severely disabled newborn babies. The doctor, who remained anonymous, reports that the parent-approved death pathways often take much longer than parents realize.

It can take ten days for a baby to die of starvation and dehydration. The doctor who wrote about his experiences admits to starving and dehydrating ten babies to death in the neonatal unit of one hospital alone. He describes the babies becoming “smaller and shrunken” as they waste away….

          The Progressive slogan should be,
Kittens. Puppies, Babies? Whats the difference, we Kill them all!

  6. Rhee says:

it must have been a really, really frigid winter in 2008-2009 because I remember taking an Alaska cruise vacation in late summer 2009 and took pics of a lot of ice as far south as Juneau… or maybe the prediction was off by a little bit. Perhaps on my future vacation I’ll be able to see the 49th state free of ice and snow…
