Living on the road my friend, was gonna keep you free and clean. Now you wear your skin like iron – breath’s as hard as kerosene.
- Townes Van Zandt
My big oil/big tobacco denier paycheck didn’t come through again, so I’m drinking beer out on Church Street in Burlington, VT while my laundry is drying at the laundromat. I’m living in a tent 15 miles away – which had an inch of water this morning and my sleeping bag was soaked after an inch of rain last night. The frogs were deafening last night. (Apparently they don’t mind being wet.) When you have to ride your bike for an hour to do the laundry, the beer tastes a lot better.
I love my life here. People don’t realize how much they are missing living indoors in their climate controlled homes and cars, and sitting in front of their brain-controlled televisions. It makes them crazy enough to believe brainless government propaganda, and causes them to miss the grace God has given us.
“If I saw a TV set in here, I’d shoot it like I would a mad dog.”
- Edward Abbey
Yes, if my TV had a brain to controlling it, I would shoot it as well.
Mine just has this little remote control, which my brother named Shmeckus.
It is amazing how much more alive you can feel camping out, especially back east. I’ve slept in a tent when the high was 23 F with snow and when it was 110. Also I’ve been out in rain like you can only get back east.
These days at my age I stick to camping in national and state parks with facilities. My wife is into flush toilets and sink baths. Even so, we experienced Elk wandering throught the Grand Canyon camping area like they owned the place or something last summer. The grandkids were absolutely thrilled.
Next week we hit the road for a 2-week trip for Nevada, California, Oregon and returning to Arizona. Going to tent camp as much as possible all along the way… Can’t wait.
I was at the Grand Canyon earlier this month. Snowed like crazy the day we arrived and snowed a blizzard 7 days later when we left. But oddly it was mostly beautiful weather in between.
Climate change ;-)
I have a tiny house in the Adirondacks if you need a place to crash:

How does that cotton or is it polyfibre, wadding on the roof work when it rains?
I thatch my roof with snow. It’s a good insulator.
You have done a very nice job of it too,
.. if you don’t mind me saying so. :-)
Tony,
You make me nostalgic. Nothing like waking up with 6 inches of snow on the sleeping bag. Mostly I camped in the winter without a tent until I could scrape enough money togeter to buy a decent tent.
Unfortunately with all my critters it takes major planning to get away for more than an overnight now. On the other hand with 100 plus ac we are pretty much already away from people.
I quit TV for good 5 years ago and lived without it for years, before I started wasting $100 a month for my growing family for mostly crappy TV programming, now I am cured.
Gave up the expensive AC,replaced it with a swamp cooler which has the added benefit of bringing in a lot of air to keep the home well ventilated. I can maintain the unit without the required HVAC license as it is quite simple for good cooling in the late afternoon when it gets too warm indoors.
I did back of the truck camping when I went to places far out of town when I used to have a huge portable 25″ F5 Telescope. The canopy was all I needed to keep the bugs out and block the wind. Now this year plan to attend the Oregon Star Party in early August, tent camping is the new home on the range or in this case top of a 5,000′ Mountain.
No one watches TV in our house except the wife. The kids are not allowed watch a one way programing device. I don”t need them getting their heads filled with SJW and advocacy group subliminal messages.
TV today tells you that all white men are racist, there is white supremacy, that all young white males are rapists, misogynists and privileged, that hating men is normal, mutilating your body is normal and WILL SOMEONE TELL ME WHY THEY WANT TO MAKE MOVIES FOR 2 TO 6 YEARS CONTAIN SAME SEX RELATIONSHIP MESSAGES. like making the Frozen princess LGBT >??!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!.. for young kids?!!?!?!?!?!!?
If your kids watch TV, unplug that shit and throw it out in the garbage.
They do watch TV through VHS/DVD Movies and some cartoons I bought over the years, but NO paid TV programming drivel.
Oh and I forgot, terrifying your kids with man made global warming.
It’s known that if you subject kids to fear and anxiety at a young age, it affects their learning. They shouldn’t even be thinking about “terror” and “doom” at ages where can’t comprehend the actual facts. It’s completely unhealthy and brainwashing.
Very interesting thoughts ……. I realized after reading the above that it reminded me of my youth ….. I am from the UK and was born in 1960, so I grew up in the cold war and was worried as a kid that we were all going to be blown apart in a war with the Russians. It was not a dominant thing but was always there in the back of your head. ……….. Now with all the scare stories of global warming DOOM & GLOOM it is akin to what I grew up with …. !!!
I don’t even bother talking about global warming stuff with them, but I do get them to pay some attention to the weather and look at the National Weather Service forecasting for my region, through the computer.
I tossed the TV habit just after graduating from college. Over forty years without government brainwashing.
Any responsible parent should do the same. Instead of giving the kids doses of government propaganda read the classics to them.
My god how do you make a 25″ portable. I got an 11″ and that kills me to mount it each time.

Throw away your papers,
Move to the country
Build you a home.

Eat a lot of peaches,
Try to find Jesus
