Galveston Disappears

“Hurricane Fifi (later known as Hurricane Orlene) was a cataclysmic tropical cyclone that killed over 8,210 people in Honduras in September 1974, ranking it as the third deadliest Atlantic hurricane on record, only behind Hurricane Mitch in 1998, and the 1780 hurricane.”

They erased the 1900 Galveston Hurricane and demoted the 1780 hurricane. The text should read :

“Hurricane Fifi (later known as Hurricane Orlene) was a cataclysmic tropical cyclone that killed over 8,210 people in Honduras in September 1974, ranking it as the fourth deadliest Atlantic hurricane on record, only behind the 1780 hurricane. the 1900 Galveston Hurricane and Hurricane Mitch in 1998”

    For comparison, it should be recalled that the majority of deaths from Hurricane Mitch did not directly result from the hurricane itself, but from mudslides caused secondarily by tremendous rainfall spawned by Hurricane Mitch. That is to say, the deaths were not due to extremely high winds or sea swell. In terms of actual ferocity, Mitch did not compare with the 1900 Galveston hurricane.
