Romm : “Antarctica is disintegrating”

Thanks Joe. That explains the record high levels of sea ice, and temperature anomalies running far below normal.

  1. Hey Joe, where you going with that acorn in your hand?

Gonna scare as many people as I can,
caught them not wanting leftist to not have power over them.

  2. Mike Davis says:

Now we know it is the magical hot deep sea water that Jim says is in the pipeline. It is the missing heat that Kevin says it is a travesty he can not find. It is the heat that Erik and company sees consuming Antarctica.
Maybe if we find out what they are smoking we can find it also!

  3. Dave N says:

Whenever someone says “something is happening over here, so expect to see this over there”, and they don’t actually look over there, you know they’re not worth much as scientists.

  4. Sense Seeker says:

Glad for you that you’re not worried, guys.

But neither Mike nor Amino has given any argument to counter the observation that the Antarctic ice is melting. Nothing but cheap comments about acorns and smoking.

Steve at least takes the trouble to cherry-pick some suitable data – but fogets that the article mentions that the heat comes from below, so is entirely compatible with large but thin ice cover.

    • The record ice proves that it is melting

    • The heat magically traverses up from below through a thick layer of cold water and cold air – on to the land and melts the ice. This is done via a heat transfer mechanism which defies all known laws of physics.

      • Dave N says:

Somehow the hotter water, instead of rising, slips under the colder water, until it reaches the part where it knows scientists want it to melt ice . It’s not hot enough to melt all the ice though, so the surface ice continues to extend to record levels, thus keeping alarmists and skeptics alike happy.

    • peterhodges says:

yes how does atmoshpheric CO2 magically heat deep ocean water?

and then transport it only to west antarctica???

this is, prima facie, a CROCK

      • Sense Seeker says:

Well, that qualification says more about your facie then about the study.

Oceans and air exchange heat. Atmosphere heats up because of more greenhouse effect because of more CO2. Most of that heat is given off to the oceans. Oceans have currents, so the warmer water gets distributed. And now some of it surfaces near Antartica and since there’s ice there on the water at the moment, it eats away at the ice shelfs. See, it really isn’t rocket science.

Steve, where does this defy the laws of physics?

      • peterhodges says:

i think you are leading us on 😉

or do you fill your bathtub with 32 degree water, and then turn your furnace up to 70?

      • Mike Davis says:

Heat travels from warm to cold but warm air does not warm cold ocean due to the difference in capacity. Cold water would suck the warmth out of the air and generally remain about the same temperature. Cold moist air does a job of sucking warmth out if water as long as the cold air keeps moving because stable air soon equalizes with the water temperature.
I can warm the bathroom by running hot water into the tub but I can not warm the bath tub full of water by warming the bathroom air!
Back to basic science for you Seeker!

      • peterhodges says:

geez, did we scare him off??

i never did get the co2 heating the ocean thing, even when i accepted the general CAGW narrative.

the specific heat of h20 is 4 times that of air. the mass of the ocean is 5 ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE greater than that of the atmosphere.

        it’s junior high science, people

        tony?

      • Sense Seeker says:

“Cold water would suck the warmth out of the air and generally remain about the same temperature. ”

Yes, “about” the same temperature. But I don’t hope you are implying you can make the heat disappear entirely? That would violate the first law of thermodynamics.

Although the water warmed only slightly due to its greater heat content, the heat *did* warm the ocean. The result is: air heats up only slightly, but little by little, the ocean heats up over time.

The heat must go somewhere…! And now, it seems, some of it is surfacing in Antarctica.

      • peterhodges says:

maybe you missed this part. i even bolded it.

the specific heat of h20 is 4 times that of air. the mass of the ocean is 5 ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE greater than that of the atmosphere.

it is physically impossible for the atmosphere to heat the ocean. that is, our actual atmosphere, and our actual ocean.

and co2 is only .03% of the atmosphere! that would really be some ‘gravity defying lifting’

    • Mike Davis says:

      Seeker:
I am not going through ALL the possible causes for ice loss around Antarctica and most especially the West Antarctic peninsula. The claimed ice loss is part of a natural process that has been going on longer than humans have been on the planet. It is part of the natural ebb and flow that is long term weather patterns.

      STUFF HAPPENS!

      • Sense Seeker says:

O, so now it IS happening. That’s at least a step forward.

      • Mike Davis says:

While there may be a minor ice loss in a few areas around Antarctica especially the peninsula the area around the entire continent is gaining ice.
So you are concerned about a region that comprises maybe 1% of the entire coast line of the continent that is outside of the Antarctic Circle.
HURRY! HURRY! THE SKY IS FALLING AND WE NEED TO FIND A JACK TO HOLD IT UP!!!

    • Justa Joe says:

Seeker, You’re right about one thing. I’m not worried.

  5. Andy Weiss says:

The disinformation machine is working overtime! Since only penguins live in Antarctica, there is no one there to report what is really going on.

    • Sense Seeker says:

You don’t know what’s going on there, but you think you know enough to say that this scientist, who has been studying it for years, is wrong?

      • Richard Lindzen is the most prestigious climatologist in the world. I am sure you don’t think he is wrong.

      • Sense Seeker says:

Too much honour for the man, but there’s still a difference in credibility.

      • peterhodges says:

        allright i offer a qualification:

i would have to look at the paper. if they actually measured actual temperatures, then i would believe what they are saying about “warming in western antarctic waters”, or the evolution of the current(s) moving through said areas.

however, everything else they say in no way follows. not only is there no evidence for any of it, it is outright preposterous.

Too much honour for the man, but there’s still a difference in credibility.

        You wouldn’t know the difference.

  6. “Antarctica is disintegrating”

This is worse than the “ice cap sliding into the sea” stories. The continent itself is falling apart! The warmists are masters of crafting vivid images, which accounts for much of their success with the public.

    • Sense Seeker says:

LOL. Usually Steve has to think of a put a hyperbolic title like that above the items, but I must agree his work was made a bit easier this time.

Idiot! It is not up to any of them to “disprove” an hypothesis! itis up to the clowns making the claim to PROVE it. So far, other than exciting some hysterical fools like you, they have only claimed something not in evidence.

    • Paul H says:

The clowns keep asking us to prove that AGW is not happening.

You can prove something is happening but how can you prove something is not?

      • PhilJourdan says:

That is the trap that TonyD, ChrisD and this moron want you to fall into. As soon as they can get you to start trying to disprove it – they have won. And that is their plot. You cannot prove a negative. At best you can show it has not happened, but you cannot show it never can.
