Not on the top of the ice sheet, but it IS pretty warm for the time of year in the capital Nuuk: http://www.wunderground.com/global/stations/04250.html
(but not record warm – records from 2001 were not broken over the last few days)
And it’s even “balmier” in the neighboring arctic Canada: Coral Harbour has set “heat” records for several days now (e.g. at +2 C on the 17th, normal is -24 C): http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/CYZS/2010/12/17/DailyHistory.html
But on the east coast of Greenland, everything is normal, e.g. in Illoqqortoormiut:

See WUWT for more on the drastic conditions at Nuuk:

Scroll down for photos of the weather station at Nuuk! It might explain some of the HOT temperatures there!
Mike Davis says:
Thanks. That’s where I was going to point Espen. I particularly like the thermometer on the tarmac and just behind the possible jet exhaust. ;>)
Check out the Svalbard link as well.
There is a clear 2C AHI effect at the airport there, proved by taking temps driving down the road.
Julia Slingo – Mets Chief Scientist seems to think it’s warmer there !!!

And according to Bishop Hill none in NZ:
The times they are a changin’
It has taken a year:-
“New New Zealand temperature records – no warming”
They have removed the “adjustments” and now report no warming since 1960!
http://www.bishop-hill.net/blog/2010/12/21/new-new-zealand-temperature-records-no-warming.html
Who’dda thunk that our friends from N.Z. would lead the way! Well done and congrats!
Of course, they can go back to sound science and honest data now that they have their cap-and-trade.
One thing to keep in mind when considering that “heat wave” in western Greenland and arctic Canada (it’ a really big red blotch in today’s anomaly map) is that the change in the total heat content of air when heated from -20 C to 0 C (approximately what you get when heating from normal to current conditions in these areas) is much smaller than the change in heat content when heated from e.g. 0 C to 20 C . I tried a quick calculation with an online enthalpy calculator (I hope I did it right, I’m a mathematician but not a physicist) and the “energy surplus” at a place in arctic Canada which currently has a temperature anomaly of about +20 C and a relative humidity of 90%, is roughly equivalent to the energy gain of air in Santiago de Cuba if the temperature were to rise from the current record cool 18 C to a mere 26 C (but while keeping the relative humidity of 82% constant).
(As many have pointed out before, mean global temperature is really a completely useless measure of atmospheric heat content – and thus of “global warming”)
Green Sand: Wow, that’s really big news. Almost can’t believe it!
Steve: My first comment in this thread is stuck in moderation, which is a bit inconvenient since my second comment implicitly refers to it.
I think it about the right time of the year for the IPCC troops to take a beach holiday on sunny Antarctica. Right now there is 24 hours of sun and fun on the beach sand. It should be the perfect getaway in this warming world where they can work on their tans, relax and take a dip in the warm ocean!
More record cold forecast for England

If GISTEMP uses the New Zealand temperature records, I trust Dr. Hansen will be scrupulous about adjusting his data accordingly.
He probably extrapolates those stations over half of the Pacific Ocean.
Where would you expect the NIWA got their bogus records from? Either GISS or GHCN!
Some places are warm, many places are cold. Some records are set here, others there. There is nothing unusual about that. That’s the way the weather is!
But it’s still caused by Global Warming:
http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2010/1220/1224285916531.html
I’d really like to see a global map coloured with the ‘average’ temp of 15? in green with the fade to blue or white for cooler actual temps and oranges and reds for higher actual temps rather than a fiery anomaly which is actually a temp of -5?…
