After the 1977 riots that burned down a hunk of NYC, we had very little police protection in the hardest hit communities. The mayor of NYC boasted that the cops killed nobody during the riots. The only two people killed were shot by two shop owners I knew. Their stores were the only ones in our hood that were not looted.
Afterwards, I made a lot of news back then because I gave speeches about police matters deep inside the black neighborhoods. This is where Al Sharpton tried to get me killed.
The Daily News called me ‘The Housewife From Hell’ back then because I organized street patrols in these communities and we made an amazing number of citizen arrests and every one of the thugs we nailed were successfully prosecuted by the DA.
This is also because I ran a new DA for Brooklyn and several tough new judges like Judge Becker.
One day, I was so irritated with students rioting on a subway train, vandalizing it, I talked to the conductor of the train to get him to lock the car with the students smashing things so they couldn’t get out and I had myself locked inside with them so I could have a captive audience.
When I told them all they were under arrest, they threatened to kill me, screamed insults and laughed…until the next station when the doors didn’t open. Then, we went onwards to West 4th Street in Manhattan where the subway cop headquarters are.
A line of cops were there and all the now crying students were arrested. When I showed up in court, all these kids with their free lawyers provided by the taxpayers, were sure I wouldn’t show up but I did and greeted the judge who said to the kids, ‘Say hello to the Housewife from Hell.’
They all plead guilty and their punishment was to clean up graffiti from the subway station where they were arrested while under MY supervision. I chatted with each one as they worked. This so impressed on kid, he reformed and studied law and became a prosecutor. He said, ‘I want to be on your side of the courtroom next time.’
Today, I would NEVER do any of this. This latest generation is way, way out of control, far worse than in the 1970’s.
Maybe we are getting old, but there are some young people crazy enough to preach on the street. And I don’t mean the Al Sharpton sort of preaching.
My youngest son worries my wife sick by going into the worst parts of Boston with a group of whites, blacks and Asians, and telling gangs to shape up, and to learn how to Love in the manner Jesus taught. Rather than getting the -bleep- pounded out of him, he says it is a real adrenalin rush, because what he calls “The Spirit” helps them.
It sounds totally mad, but then, what you did in the 1970’s likely sounded completely mad to the people back then. And, by the way, thank you for doing what you did.
My parents used to help fund two nuns who smuggled Bibles behind the Iron Curtain, and from time to time they would visit our church and talk about their work. These British ladies were well into their sixties, and they were fearless. Getting caught smuggling Bibles back then could land you in a gulag.
On one trip, they set the Bibles on the back seat of their VW Bug in plain view, because they felt they were told to do so. The crossing guards looked through the entire car, and then let them pass, apparently somehow not seeing the stack of Bibles on the back seat.
I was a repo-man in East St Louis during my college years, and got shot at multiple times, a few times I returned to the office with bullet holes in the van. Thankfuklly I was never seriously injured, even though I worked down there for over 2 years, and definitely pushed my luck.
I just don’t feel the need to tempt fate any longer, and pray your son remains safe.

I think we all were nuts, and tempted fate too much, when we were young. It is a wonder we survived. I know many who didn’t.
There was some woman in Afghanistan who gave shawls to the shivering poor, because the Koran said you should, and she got pissed off by men selling magic amulets in front of a Mosque, exploiting the superstitions of the poor. When she told them they should be ashamed, they beat her to death.
The thing of it was this incident apparently has pissed off the entire female population of Afghanistan. Many are painting their faces red in protest, and there are marches down city streets, which is unheard of in Islamic culture. The men folk are backing off big time.
It is sad when someone has to die to make a difference, and I sure hope I never have to do it. However, even though I have become far more cautious in my old age, if push came to shove I like to think I still could get pushed to a point where I’d say, “Give me Liberty, or give me death.”
This generation would hunt you down not change their ways. They are truly ‘lost’.

So there is an excuse, again. And it is never the fault of the ‘gansta’ culture.
“If our society really wanted to solve the problem, we could,” the president said. “It’s just it would require everybody saying this is important, this is significant, and that we don’t just pay attention to these communities when a CVS burns and we don’t just pay attention when a young man gets shot or has his spine snapped. We’re paying attention all the time because we consider those kids our kids, and we think they’re important, and they shouldn’t be living in poverty and violence.”

And the latest on Freddie is that he had cervical spinal fusion surgery two weeks before he died. He had been receiving structured insurance payments for an injury in an automobile accident years ago from Allstate. He may have had a previous fusion that ‘failed’ and was just released from the hospital after fusion attempt number two.

Rumours about a lawsuit involving Freddie Gray and Allstate insurance began flying around social media late today. One site in particular, The Fourth Estate, was apparently more concerned about being first than they were about being right.
Quoting anonymous sources, they reported, quite definitively, that Freddie Gray sustained spinal injuries in an accident and had endured several unsuccessful spinal fusion surgeries. One just weeks prior to his arrest by Baltimore Police.
Better to just wait, and see what the facts are.
