what a friggin bedwetter lying moron…………….
This caught my eye:
“if the climate continues to warm we should expect an increase in heavy snowstorms for a few decades.”
In a few decades, the PDO is going to shift back to the warm mode:
http://climate.gi.alaska.edu/ClimTrends/Change/TempChange.html
I wonder if he knows about the PDO?
Too cold means -40 F, clear dry skies. Look at the average high for February for, say Mississippi, and look at the temperature that was occurring during their snowfall in February-quite a difference wasn’t it.
Maybe Mississippi was above the Snow Line, as in altitude above sea level where it is above the snow clouds and with the advent of global warming and sea level rise Mississippi is now at a lower altitude and more susceptible to receiving snow. On the other hand Jeff might have had a bad “Trip” from his last intake of research enhancing substances.
WOW MAN! I Can see Mississippi being to cold to get Snow!!!!
Mississippi was part of Antarctica before 1945?
If it is to cold to snow it is also to cold to rain so Mississippi must be part of the desert South West in perpetual drought! The water you think you see in the swamps is a mirage!
Yes, and a warming planet is also consistent with a record cold December in Florida where previous long standing monthly average temperature records were smashed by up to 5 degrees (F). In some cases, warmcold can be much, much colder than coldcold! And that is a peer reviewed fact, even if two years ago the concept had not yet been discovered.
You just missed that peer reviewed study in the well respected Journal for Water Closet Contemplation or its Eco sibling OHRWM Out House Reading /Wiping Material. Both are made for pure Virgin Recycled Old Growth trees to save the Spotted Owl.
What kind of dysfunction does a meteorologist have to have to deny the fact that we had record cold weather throughout the entire Northern Hemisphere all winter! The only dolts blathering about snowstorms are the alarmists. Except when we’re talking in terms of snow occurring where is normally doesn’t……like freaking Mexico!
I have a better one..
What kind of dysfunction does a meteorologist have to have to claim that there is more moisture in the air, because it’s warmer, when precipitation -measured water – is almost record low.
If it wasn’t so cold, it would have rained, then they would have claimed that the drought was because of global warming…………….
I’m not a weather geek, but even I understand that being too cold to snow refers to tendancy for really cold weather (sub zero) to occur during conditions of high barometric pressure while snow storm conditions typically (but not always) occur during lower barometric pressures. I heard this pre-AGW hysteria.
It seems like this Jeff Masters is mis-applying this to Mississippi. I doubt that even during the warmists’ ideal age of “stable” weather that Mississippi saw a lot of big time cold fronts.
Seems there’s always only a degree or two of separation between these AGW promoters and the ’96-to-present smear of skeptic scientists. I already detailed the connection with the Union of Concerned Scientists to this in my Aug 26, 2010 American Thinker article “Silencing global warming critics” http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2010/08/silencing_global_warming_criti.html
Jeff Masters appears to be a willing shill, as seen in his April 2006 blog ( http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/comment.html?entrynum=341&tstamp=200604 ) where he regurgitated quotes from anti-skeptic book author Ross Gelbspan, “the Information Council on the Environment (ICE)… launched a PR campaign whose goal was to “reposition global warming as theory rather than fact”. …The PR campaign hired four “greenhouse skeptic” scientists–Patrick Michaels, Fred Singer, Robert Balling, and Sherwood Idso–to generate op-ed pieces, broadcast appearances, and newspaper interviews.
First, none of the ICE scans I’ve seen mention Fred Singer. Second, Gelbspan’s 1997 hardcover The Heat is On version said Singer worked for the ICE, but the 1998 paperback version substitutes Sherwood Idso’s name for Singer’s – meaning Gelbspan must have caught the error. Third, Singer flat denies having anything to do with the ICE campaign. Fourth, the ICE campaign was no sinister directive from big coal & oil to cause skeptic scientists to fabricate false papers and assessments, as it is otherwise widely portrayed to be, but that’s a whole other story….
There is not one thing that is inconsistent with a ‘warming’ planet. If we get more mild winters they will also point to global warming. If it gets average they will blame global warming. Oh the humanity!

In 1895, Florida was included:
Two months ago I wrote about the blighting of Florida’s orange groves and vegetable crops by the unprecedented freeze of December 29. It was afterwards estimated that the loss caused by that freeze in our semi-tropical State was about $3,000,000, for 2,000,000 boxes of oranges were frozen on the trees, and many of the groves were frost-killed. Since that time, however, Florida — and the whole south — has been swept by even a colder wave. In December the temperature record since 1835 was broken, but on February 8 and 9 a new and lower record was made, and nearly all the vegetation remaining unblighted after the December visitation was killed. There were snowstorms and temperature 14° below freezing almost down to the southern point of the peninsula.

In early 1899, California was the lucky one …
“We are just emerging from a blanket of snow and ice, and recovering from the chill of a great cold wave and blizzard resembling the memorable storm of the winter of 1838. This time the low temperature was experienced in all parts of the country except California, and in the Mississippi Valley the oldest records of freezing weather were broken. The zero mark was reached even at New Orleans, and 500,000 young orange-trees in Louisiana have been killed.”

Looks like “hotcold” goes back to at least 1838 – which I believe was a few years after the introduction of dual overhead chrome plated grease nipples on buggy whips.
Correction … 1888.
So it can’t snow when it is cold, because the air needs to be warm to hold all that moisture? Thanks, Jeff.
Jeff! I found the extra moisture in the air!

Oh, wait…
The 1890’s produced some phenomenal warmcold.
The 1895 snowstorm left 15 to 20 inches in the Houston/Galveston area and up to 2 feet in SW Louisiana. New Orleans had 8″, which is still their all time record.
1899 produced 2 below zero cold in Tallahassee, FL and the only recorded blizzard in Florida history. DC received 35 inches of snow and 15 below zero cold.
The 1890s were a decade of extreme global freezing warmcold. A few of the headlines from the period:

..and so on. Count the number of times the word “intense” is used.
And of course, once this period finished, the world moved on to a decade of extreme heat and drought warmcold.
It always amuses me when people quote from newspapers and what is supposed to be a scientific blog site. 🙂
Masters comments in general are correct, the colder it gets the less snow fall, hence why there is little snowfall in the middle of Antarctica compared to wamer places. Amount of snowfall is more to do with the amount of moisture when it happens.
On the otherhand, if he is suggesting all the snow is due to global warming then I would take that with a big pinch of salt, as far as I am aware no studies have shown increased prepitation over the USA this past winter have been due to increased global temps.
Andy
The deep south has a lot in common with Antarctica.
Andy, you are missing the point.
They all claimed, and still are claiming, that warmer was putting more moisture in the air, and that the more moisture was the reason for more snow.
There was less moisture in the air.
If it wasn’t so cold, that moisture would have been rain. There was “less” moisture this year. Which is the total opposite of the bull crap they were saying.
It was the cold, not the moisture.
Andy:
In my Neck of the Woods we were running 3 inches below average seasonal precipitation before the rain this week and that probably left us in the same position as we average an inch a week during winter months. I realize in some regions there was more precipitation than average but that is just natural variations in long term weather patterns and does not mean the entire continent received “More” than “Normal”
Average is an illusion when talking about weather and “Normal” is a range between extreme events. The extreme events set records either high or low but should be based on a longer time period as we now know there is evidence of 1500 year cycles. If not for historic periods like the MWP and LIA we could use shorter periods to realize normal range. While there were rumors of more snow this season there were also rumors of less water content in the snow so a reduced precipitation would be the result!
24 inches of snow, looks like a lot….
…that’s only 1 1/2 to 2 inches of rain
There was less moisture in the warm air they claimed was holding more moisture…
It was not the warm air, it was the cold..
..otherwise, it would have fallen as rain
Yes, those news accounts cannot be correct, or even applicable to the discussion, because post normal science has definitively shown that extreme weather events are caused by CO2 and all that is worth discussing now is what to do about it.
When government scientists employ PR firms and use fear monger language on a daily basis, don’t whine when it is pointed out that what we are observing is not “unprecedented”.
Unless the Koch brothers sent evil deniers back in a time machine to plant those news articles in some misinformation campayne.
“Masters comments in general are correct, the colder it gets the less snow fall, ” – Andy
It would appear a tad more involved than that. Chicago is colder and snowier than, for example, Biloxi Mississippi. Biloxi is probably more humid in general as well. There are several factors that have to converge for snow to occur, and one of them in terms of Mississippi isn’t warming temperatures.
