The President doesn’t find it important to visit Missouri? I am wondering if Missouri went for McCain in 2008 and not him.

  2. Andy Weiss says:

That part of Missouri is quite conservative. Another case where God is punishing people who voted for evil Republican climate change deniers.

‘s really pretty horrifying to see like that .

  4. Sundance says:

The tornado tragedy pimps (Kerry, Romm, McKibben, Whitty, etc.) are busy dumbing down there followers claiming that man’s fingergerprints are all over that bottom picture. It both saddens and angers me.

Those standing trees should be a lesson to architects who insist on putting up fall down houses.

I live in a small town 15 miles south of this. Horrifying as the photo is, it doesn’t begin to do justice to the amount of destruction. My wife passed out food to volunteers yesterday at what used to be the Joplin high school and my parents helped my uncle and aunt with what’s left of their house just blocks from where this photo was taken. The dominant observation by everyone is that it’s no longer possible even to know where you are in that part of town. There are no landmarks and only cardboard signs put up temporarily to mark the streets. The photos don’t show the damage to St. John’s hospital and the main business thoroughfare that provided access to all the usual businesses, large and small. Imagine a busy 4-lane in any town with every popular fast food chain on the planet, Home Depot, Walmart, and a host of other locally owned businesses – some of which were integral parts of Joplin’s rich heritage. They’re gone. Not closed down. They’re GONE. Wiped off the face of the earth. It’s the most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever seen in my life. My wife came home crying. She used to live just blocks from here, as well, and our daughter lives about 3/4 of a mile from this, though her home escaped untouched.

I don’t know how folks in Joplin are going to cope with this. They will, because they’re strong and they’ll work together and support one another, but they could definitely use your help, even if you just send your good thoughts and moral support their way.

Is there some reason americans don’t use bricks?

    • Jeffrey says:

Brick and steel structures that have been standing for decades on Main Street didn’t survive this tornado, either. It’s hard for anything to survive 200 mph winds and a mile-wide debri ball full of cars and trucks. And I saw brick buildings destroyed by straight-line winds here last year. Ever seen those safety studies done with cannons that fire 2x4s through brick walls? It’s not obvious in the photos, but the few remnants of trees that still stand have been stripped of their bark.

  8. Andy Weiss says:

Are you sure that isn’t a scene from Hiroshima?
