Hansen : Ocean Warming To Cause Ocean Cooling

The scientist also said he’s working on a paper based on “speculative” research that indicates accelerating ice loss from Greenland will eventually cause the North Atlantic to cool, creating the conditions for more powerful storms along the lines of Hurricane Sandy, the largest Atlantic hurricane on record.

Hansen Says Exploiting Tar Sands Makes Climate Change Unsolvable – Businessweek

Homer hasn’t quite worked out the feedback concept yet. If the North Atlantic, cools – then Greenland stops melting. Then the North Atlantic stops cooling.

Trenberth says that Sandy was caused by ocean warming, and now Hansen says it was caused by ocean cooling.

Tar sand exploitation is a negative feedback.

Getting rid of all that black tar in the oil sands will increase overall albedo 😉

Hurricane Sandy (an extratropical storm when it made landfall) was a relatively small-diameter hurricane that became embedded in a huge non-tropical low-pressure system. The two systems merged, creating a powerful Nor’easter that came ashore during a full moon and at high tide. The combination of events created a large storm surge that was responsible for most of the destruction

No where in this scenario did so-called “global warming” play any role. Blaming mankind for “Superstorm Sandy” is patently asinine. As meteorologist Joe Bastardi has pointed out again and again, many more hurricanes hit the eastern seaboard during the 1950s. Compared to that period, destructive hurricane strikes on the U.S. are at historically low levels.

  3. I’ve reached a stage where the only thing I can say is: “Pardon?”

I rather think Dr Hansen needs a nice white coated assistant to adjust the straps for his comfy strait-jacket and a nice warm room with padded walls and no sharp implements …

What can we get the gullible saps to believe today?

  5. You can get lots of counter intuitive results if you play around with your Excel spreadsheet enough. Sorry, I mean computer model.

  6. Harold Ambler says:

Hansen may simply be betting that since fewer than 1 in 10,000 Americans know what the AMO is when it flips to negative he can point to it as corroboration of his theory. Canny.

  7. dave says:

Well Hansen and Trenberth have at least got it half right between them then!
