The hope that the wind and the sun and geothermal can provide all of our energy is a nice idea but I find it unlikely that that’s possible.

Even a broken clock it right twice a day.

The Eco Nutters everywhere will no longer welcome Jimmy in their clubhouse.
Supporting evil nuclear power is a major greenie sin, one that cannot be forgotten or forgiven.
His place in Enviro Heaven, on a beautiful lot just down the road a bit from Gaia’s mansion, will be revoked.
Expect Jimmie “Death Trains” to slide into irrelevance now that he can no longer be seen to speak for NASA.
If you want to melt iron without producing much CO2,
then nuclear is the reliable source for all that electricity.
How does that work exactly?
You nuke it!

Reblogged this on The Firewall.
Fear of nuclear annihilation and Remorse for killing hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians in Aug 1945 convinced world leaders and scientists to take control of the world on 24 Oct 1945.

In the 1920’s the world population hit 2 billion, now it is past 7 billion. This happened because of a greater availability of adequate food and water, significant medical improvements, and improved sanitary conditions. All of this was made possible by an ever increasing availability of energy.
Even though the current supply of fossil fuels seems limitless, and for the immediate future it may be, I believe we have already picked the lowest fruit of the fossil fuel tree in a very short time.
For the most part we have been using solar energy which has been stored over a long, long time. (and for a large part returning CO2 to the atmosphere from where it came). Renewable energy really; is for the most part current solar energy.
It seems that very few in the debate bother to quantify, energy needs versus energy which may be available. It only makes economic sense to to be efficient and make use of what we can.
Currently the most efficient and economical sources of energy are in the class of fossil fuels. (with exceptions to be noted-like geothermal). Some time, sooner or later we will have used much of the stored energy, including oil on the north shore of Alaska and elsewhere.
However, simply using napkin calculations and a little common sense, based upon a smidget of understanding, one can see that the energy stored in bonding atoms will have been released, and we will, out of necessity, use that energy which drives the universe and which is stored in the atoms nucleus. The supply is essentially limitless,
Although other sources definitely help, especially in places like rural Minnesota where I live, the rapidly accelerating venture of human endeavor will eventually move more and more toward Nuclear energy. Why not now?
Isn’t that what “deniers” say?
Wow, I just found myself agreeing with Jim Hansen!!!— I think?– is that possible?
Hansen is a virtually unhinged nutcase without a consistent ideology. The man’s a loon. No wonder NASA set him adrift.
“[in twenty years {2008} ] the West Side Highway [and thus most of Manhattan] will be under water.” -James Hansen, 1988
“If you leave us at 450ppm for long enough it will probably melt all the ice – that’s a sea rise of 75 metres. ” -James Hansen, 2013
“Chief executives of large fossil fuel companies [should] be put on trial for high crimes against humanity and nature.” -James Hansen, NASA
“If Canada proceeds [with its tar sands oil development] …ice sheets would accelerate out of control. Sea levels would rise and destroy coastal cities. Global temperatures would become intolerable. Twenty to 50 percent of the planet’s species would be driven to extinction.” -James Hansen, 2012
Baloney. What a loon.
