Cold will further increase and southern Brazil should return to see snow
It snowed in the last hours (dawn and morning) in dozens of cities here in southern Brazil. In Rio Grande do Sul, the snow was more expressive in São José dos Absent in Aparados da Serra, where the flakes arrived to accumulate. The accumulation was small in the region and ranged from “dash” (minimum) and 3 cm. Snowed in at least five regions gaucho: Northwest Middle Uruguay, Alto Uruguay, Middle Plateau and the Sierra Aparados.

Argentina: As reported by Civil Defense and Road Safety of Chubut, cars and trucks remain stranded in Garayalde height, on National Route 3 between Trelew and Comodoro Rivadavia. The place will be cut off until at least tomorrow.

If this keeps up 2013 will be the new hottest year on record! Although I suspect that, for verisimilitude, they’ll wait a couple of years before putting that canary on display again.
Let’s see how the rest of the SH winter goes and if this has no negative “see-saw” effect on the NH. Both Antarctic and Arctic ice extents are doing pretty well this year.
It would be absolute proof of data manipulation if they try to claim 2013 as anywhere near the hottest year on record. Between the unusually long winter in north America and Europe, the record low temperatures in Russia and China. The Artic being below average for the entire of 2013, and being colder by 5 degrees on average. A ho hum summer, where 70+% of the country showed average to below average temperatures and now this major cold spell in South America, New Zealand/Australia, and Antartica being 5 to 10 degrees below normal. That’s a whole lot of cold. My guess that’s the reason the alarmists are in freakout mode.
We still have the fall in the northern hemisphere, but I guarantee we are below what the average has been these past ten years or so. I think the downward trend since 2007 in temperatures will continue this year and likely next.
Is there anyone who doubts that we are in the early years of a colding phase? If the colding trend continues into next year, there will be a seven year colding trend. Remember that Hansen was predicting catastrophic global warming after a trend of 9 years (in 1988).
Watching their heads explode will be fun to watch.

Is this really unusual?….it is winter down there. In fact they have 2 months of winter to go.
The number of cities hit by the snow and the duration of the cold air spell from Antartica is record… for the last 15 years. But yes, it snows every brazilian winter in the south of the country, usually in small quantities, sometimes localized stronger snowfalls.
It usually only snows in cities abouve 500 meters, but sometimes it snows in cities at sea level (not much quantity however).
However, current snowfall can´t compare to 19th and early 20th century, when there are registers of 2m deep snow accumulation in 1879 and 50cm in 1953. If anything, snowfall has been decreasing constantly in Southern Brazil.
Maybe what makes it seems, to foreigners (and even to Brazilians) it snows more now than in the past is the internet and digital cameras.
