No doubt it was kindler, gentler and cooler fire.
My brother and I traveled to Yellowstone a year after the fires. We left San Francisco, thru Napa, the Avenue of the Giants, Crater Lake, Craters of the Moon, the Black Hills, Devil’s Tower, the Tetons, and then on to the park. I expected a disaster and was pleased to see nature as God intended, Yellowstone was, and remains magnificent.
We crossed desert, mountain and prairie that trip, in another wonder, a 1970 Buick GS 455 convertible. It was an incredible journey, no interstate until we hit Kansas City. If I live to be 100, I will never be able to recreate that memory.
I was in Yellowstone shortly after that and I had no idea it was so big. Amazing what a beautiful place it is with all the trees out of the way.
One of the things that nature teaches us is that forests that don’t burn are forests that don’t evolve. Thank Dog for forest fires, wind storms, glaciation, loggers, bark beetles, syrup tappers, and anything else that keeps forests dynamic and alive.
