Earth’s energy balance is driven by the Sun. The amount of heat leaving the planet, has to average out to be equal to the amount of energy incoming.

Solar energy reaches the ground and warms it. This heat in turn warms the atmosphere via conduction and absorption by greenhouse gases. All of that heat has to return to space, via radiation, convection, evaporation in the lower troposphere, condensation in the upper troposphere, etc. Essentially all of the heat is dissipated into space by greenhouse gases in the upper atmosphere.

Without greenhouse gases, atmospheric physics doesn’t work at all. That is why people who don’t accept greenhouse gas theory can not participate in the discussion. It is like trying to design a building without accepting the existence of gravity.

I turned on the heat in the apartment tonight.

Not because I was particularly cold, but because I realized that I didn’t feel at home. A warm home is much more enjoyable, and makes you feel freer.

At this point, anyone who attempts to claim that the greenhouse effect doesn’t exist, is assumed to be an alarmist plant trying to make skeptics look bad. You will be banned immediately.

Last year I did a post on several hundred thousand AK-47 mags which the US Army purchased. This seemed odd, because the US Army doesn’t use Russian rifles.

Today there was a news story that ISIS is well stocked for the next two years with US purchased armaments “stolen” from the Iraqi army.

If you put on a heavy coat, and go out for a run, the coat makes you warm faster.

If you come back from the run, and do not remove your coat, the coat makes you cool slower. The distinction between warming and cooling is meaningless with respect to the insulating properties of the coat.  The coat makes you warmer than you would be without the coat. The direction of warming or cooling is controlled by the heat source, not by the fixed insulator.

The ugly anti-greenhouse gas argument which keeps popping its head up here is so stupid, it had to have been a plant from alarmists designed to make skeptics look stupid.

Anyone who attempts to bring that argument up again after this thread, will be spammed. It is making it impossible to have any serious scientific discussion.

My position is to defend science, and defend quality of life – i.e. the environment, the political environment and the economic environment.

Most of the nonsense is on the alarmist side of the debate, but there is plenty on the skeptic side too.

The greenhouse effect is basic, fundamental science – like gravity.

The sun strikes the Earth’s surface, and warms it. This causes the Earth to radiate longwave radiation up through the atmosphere. Some of this radiation is captured by molecules of greenhouse gas, which causes the air to warm. Warm greenhouse gases in turn radiate more longwave radiation, half of which radiates downwards towards Earth and warms the Earth’s surface further.

This does not change the energy flux in the atmosphere. The energy flux moving upwards (via reflection, radiation, convection, evaporation, condensation, etc.) is always going to average out to be equal to the amount of incoming solar radiation. The greenhouse effect simply elevates temperatures above what they would be without greenhouse gases. It behaves like an insulator. It is not a heat source and does not violate the laws of thermodynamics. People who make that argument are completely clueless.

The vast majority of this warming is near the Earth’s surface, and is due to H2O molecules, rather than CO2. Forecasts of large amounts of CO2 warming, are not based on any legitimate science.

In 1936, nearly one day out of four was either over 100 degrees, or below 0 degrees F in South Dakota. This sort of weather is inconceivable now, as the climate has grown much less extreme over time.
