A Long Term Semi-Rural Station In Victoria

The station at Nhill, Australia is in farm country on the edge of town – about 50 metres from a road. It shows temperatures were hotter during some years in the early 20th century, and no general trend in maximum temperature.

What Could Possibly Go Wrong At Streaky Bay, SA?

Streaky Bay, SA shows warming over the past century. And like most other Australia stations, the GHCN data prior to 1957 is missing.

And Google Earth shows it right in the middle of a jungle of asphalt and buildings.

Major Monkey Business In Australia

A few days ago I noted that the GHCN database for Australia has very little data prior to 1957, and wondered if the jump was due to Sputnik.

ScreenHunter_2481 Sep. 02 10.56

Well it turns out that lack of data prior to 1957 is due to GHCN simply not including it. Berkeley Earth has Nobbys data going back to the 1860’s, but the GHCN data is missing prior to 1957

But it is worse than it seems. Note that the GHCN data is not the same, and averages about half a degree higher than the Berkeley Earth data.

ScreenHunter_2541 Sep. 05 06.09

But even that is worse than it seems. Yesterday I noted that the upwards slope at Nobbys was the same as the slope at Sydney since 1957.  But according to Berkeley Earth, there has been no net warming at Nobby’s since 1970. Which means that Sydney is seeing major UHI effects.

Once again, this looks like major monkey business with the “every month hotter than normal” NOAA GHCN data.

Freddie Mercury Reincarnated [Corrected]

Today is Freddie Mercury’s 68th birthday. Check out Adam Lambert, who has replaced him. Not the same presence on stage, but his voice is almost a carbon copy.

Check out Marc Martel, whose voice is almost a carbon copy. I heard him on the radio and Brian May talking about him yesterday – originally posted the wrong person

Greenhouse Effect And Thermodynamics

If there were few greenhouse gases (like Antarctica) LW radiation would easily escape the earth’s atmosphere and temperatures would be much colder.

The presence of greenhouse gases makes it more difficult for LW radiation to escape, which forces the atmosphere to warm in order to maintain equilibrium.

Conservation of energy tells us that any LW radiation which gets absorbed by CO2, remains in the atmosphere for a while and keeps the atmosphere’s energy level up – which is reflected in higher temperatures.

Of Course The Greenhouse Effect Is Real

Anyone who lives in a cold climate knows that a cloudy night will feel much warmer than a clear night at the same temperature. This is because of downwelling longwave radiation from the clouds – i.e. the Greenhouse Effect. H2O and CO2 do the same thing, to a lesser extent.

Hiding The Decline In Bathurst

ScreenHunter_2534 Sep. 04 12.54

GHCN thermometer data shows Bathurst cooling 1.3C/century from 1910 to 1983, yet NASA shows Bathurst warming by 0.3C/century over that same period (using the same thermometer data.)

They accomplish this through an impressive hockey stick of data tampering.
