It wasn’t supposed to be this way.

With the Iowa political caucuses on the horizon in 2007, presidential candidate Barack Obama made homegrown corn a centerpiece of his plan to slow global warming. And when President George W. Bush signed a law that year requiring oil companies to add billions of gallons of ethanol to their gasoline each year, Bush predicted it would make the country “stronger, cleaner and more secure.”

But the ethanol era has proven far more damaging to the environment than politicians promised and much worse than the government admits today.

As farmers rushed to find new places to plant corn, they wiped out millions of acres of conservation land, destroyed habitat and polluted water supplies, an Associated Press investigation found.

I was living in Houston in September 1988, when the actual most powerful hurricane was forecast to hit the Texas coast. I remember covering the windows at the college I was teaching at in preparation for the storm. Fortunately the storm missed Texas.

They had more than 24 hours notice, and had they been two miles inland would have been safe. Why were people in range of the storm surge at the time the storm hit? There shouldn’t have been any casualties.

Part of the evolutionary process is survival of individuals who are willing to put in the effort to protect themselves.

NOAA and NASA claim that 2012 was “by far” the hottest year ever in the US, based on massively tampered data. But a look at the raw data shows that 2012 was not a very hot year in the US. Springtime temperatures were very pleasant and far above normal in 2012, but summer temperatures were not exceptional

All ten occurred with CO2 below 350 PPM, and the only one since 1954 was 1988 – the summer when Hansen sabotaged the air conditioner and told Congress that we were all going to burn up from future global warming

2012 may have brought the most pleasant springtime in the US, but certainly not the hottest year.

Typhoon Haiyan tore through the Philippines at record wind speeds before losing power and heading northwest.

The picture below clearly shows that the bulk of the damage was from the storm surge, not the wind. Those trees would have snapped in 195 MPH winds.

IS NOT HONESTY THE WISEST POLICY?

It is wrong to mutilate or suppress the record of an observation of a phenomenon of nature, but it is also wrong to make a bad use of the record. In fact, it is the misuse of meteorological data, not the observing or publishing, that constitutes a crime against the community. Observation and careful research are to be encouraged as useful. Misrepresentations are to be avoided as harmful. The “Independent Press “as the” Voice of the People “should be not only “Vox Populi” but ” Vox Dei “, repressing all cheats and hoaxes, defending the truth and the best interests of the whole nation as against the self-interest of a few.

Is not honesty the best policy?

If you repeat a lie often enough, it becomes the truth.

Philippine president Benigno Aquino III said local officials exaggerated the likely death toll from typhoon Haiyan, which he put at between 2,000 and 2,500. Initial estimates from officials in the hardest-hit Leyte province had been 10,000 dead or more.

The 195 MPH winds were exaggerated by 30%. The storm surge was exaggerated by 120% and the death toll was exaggerated by 300%.

Nothing about this storm was record breaking, but that won’t stop the press, politicians and climate alarmists from lying about it for as long as they can use it to their advantage.

Jeff Masters rushed to press that Yolanda had the highest wind speeds ever at landfall, before there was any actual surface data available.  It turned out that he exaggerated the wind speeds by more than 30%.

His claimed basis was satellite approximations made at altitude hours earlier over open water. Wind speeds are always going to be higher above the surface -because there is less friction. And of course we don’t have any comparable data for storms like Camille in 1969.

The only apples to apples comparison we can make is that Camille had surface measurements in excess of 190 MPH, and Yolanda was below 150 MPH.

So why did Masters do it? The only way to blame this storm on global warming was to make it a record. Once the legend was created, it propagated and will stay out there for at least a year before the dust settles.
