NOAA now considers a few weeks of 60F in March to be the most extreme heatwave in history.

If the poles are melting down at an unprecedented rate, why has polar sea ice area been above normal for the last three weeks?

1. Because GISS is located in the northern hemisphere
2. Because of the ozone hole, which disappeared three months ago
3. All the polar bears and penguins are extinct
4. Because of the Koch brothers
5. Because it has been very cold in the Arctic and Antarctic

The rules for discussing sea ice are very dynamic

1. Ice extent is important in late summer, but not the rest of the year. And only in the Arctic.
2. Never discuss any actual data about Antarctic ice, just cry for the Penguins.
3. During the winter you must never discuss ice extent, only fake volume data from PIOMAS
4. Whether the ice is increasing or decreasing, it is all your fault.

The first three months of 2012 were the mildest on record in the US (slightly warmer than 1921) and so far in 2013 those same months have been among the coldest on record.

There has been no trend in January-March temperatures in the US over the last 90 years.

The 2013 numbers will come up some as the month progresses, but as it stands now the first three months of 2013 are ranked among the ten coldest.
