Einstein said that as a joke mocking junk scientists, but Hansen took him literally.

In 1999, Hansen was troubled by the fact that millions of temperature records showed that the US wasn’t warming. So in the year 2000, he simply changed the data to match his theory.

Hansen 1999:  “in the U.S. there has been little temperature change in the past 50 years, the time of rapidly increasing greenhouse gases — in fact, there was a slight cooling throughout much of the country”

The graph  below shows the difference between current published GISS US temperature data, and what they published in 1999.

The 1880s, 1930s and 1940s are now being reported by Hansen as nearly 0.2C below what the thermometers actually read, and current temperatures are being reported nearly 0.4C above what the thermometers read. Based on the data tampering curve above, we can infer that Hansen believes that modern thermometers are poor, and progressively getting worse.

After Hansen’s clever data tampering, the US now appears to be warming and his theory is validated in the minds of  the press and politicians. The entire US warming curve below  is due to the fact that the temperatures being reported by GISS are not what was measured by the thermometers. If the actual thermometer data was shown in the graph, there would be no warming.

They could make a video game out of this and call it Grand Theft NASA.

Suppose that a CEO was unhappy with a 70 year downward trend in his company’s revenues, so he told his accountants to develop a new accounting method which shows an increase. Then he erased the original raw data from the company website, and presented the new graphs  without mention of the change in accounting practices. Chances are that law enforcement would be hauling him away in the not too distant future.

The sun has passed the zenith and is starting to recede towards winter. The Greenland Ice Sheet is now in full bloom at -8C.

During the 1940s, clever humans came up with the idea that we can stop forest fires by putting a bear in trousers.

Fire is a normal and essential part of the pine forest cycle. Without regular fires, the forest gets overgrown with thin, unhealthy trees that are susceptible to disease and insects. Most forest fires used to burn primarily along the ground, but now they frequently burn up into the crowns of the trees – because there is so much fuel on the ground and the fires burn very hot.

The combination of fire suppression and clever people building houses right next to stands of trees waiting to burn, now costs taxpayers huge amounts of money. Instead of blaming decades of human interference with the fire cycle and the stupidity of home owners, they blame climate change. A key factor in the belief in catastrophic global warming is a total lack of understanding about how nature works.

AUSTRALIAN ski resorts are bracing for a massive dump of snow this weekend, with up to 80cm predicted to fall over the next three days.  Resorts are gearing up to open more lifts this weekend, with the snow coming in time for the start of the July school holidays.

Empirical evidence does not lend much support to the notion that climate is headed precipitately toward more extreme heat and drought. The drought of 1999 covered a smaller area than the 1988 drought, when the Mississippi almost dried up. And 1988 was a temporary inconvenience as compared with repeated droughts during the 1930s “Dust Bowl” that caused an exodus from the prairies, as chronicled in Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath…..

Why would any alarmist argue with NOAA, Phil Jones and James Hansen?

Every other sentence has something along the lines of “that was debunked here” or “that was discredited here” and then the usual smattering of words like hapless, incoherent, etc….

But what you won’t see is any discussion of the actual data or the concept being contested. The defense of their belief system invariably comes down to ad homs and appeals to authority – because most alarmists don’t know jack shit about anything. Their belief system comes down to – “humans are evil” – and beyond that any details aren’t important.

Most of the greenhouse effect of CO2 occurs from the first 30 ppm. The RRTM data above shows that going from 393 ppm to 560 ppm will increase the greenhouse effect by less than 0.25% in the tropics.

This data was generated from the model which Kevin Trenberth uses. What we see is the opposite of a tipping point. It is more like a napping point.
