Climate Magic From Phil

Phil Jones has readings from exactly one thermometer in the southern hemisphere during 1850, and is still able to report the 1850 southern hemisphere anomaly within a precision of 0.001 degrees.

New York Times Hopes That You Are An Idiot – Or Less Than 50 Years Old

If those New England seasons feel far warmer these days than they were 20 years ago, it’s because they are. So are Florida’s, Arizona’s, and Washington State’s.

A State-by-State Climate Map – NYTimes.com

According to GISS 2006, Florida is cooler than it was in the 1930s and the 1880s.

According to CRU, Washington State was warmer in the 1850s.

Arizona has shown no change. for 100 years.

Maine was warmer in the 1870s

Archive Any Interesting Data

One of the things we have learned about GISS is that they overwrite data in place. For example, there have been several radically different versions of the Reykjavik temperature data already this year. They have blocked access to data archiving engines like web archive, so you can’t find old GISS data there either.

On January 18, 2011 someone at GISS apparently tried to destroy this graph, which showed that Hansen used to believe that the 1930s was the hottest decade.

fig1x.gif (500×182)

The corrupted version of the graph looked like this

It is very unlikely this happened by accident, but because I had archived an older version, I was able to report on the change. The original file was restored a few days later. The source data behind this graph has been deleted from the GISS file system.

Destroying Evidence At The Ministry Of Truth? | Real Science

If interested parties continuously archive as much GISS data as possible, we can track their endless alteration of the climate record. Too bad we can’t get back the disappeared data from the 1990s.

Kinder, Gentler Fires – Without Human Interference In The Climate

The Big Blowup of 1910

The winter and spring of 1910 were dry, uncommonly dry, in the Pacific Northwest, especially the interior portions east of the Cascades. The snow did not fall; then the rain did not fall. The temperatures in April and May that year set records in Idaho and Montana, climbing into the 90s.  By the time summer arrived, the deep forests of ponderosa pine, spruce, fir, and other big trees that carpeted the region were bone-dry.

An inch of rain fell in June. Not a drop fell in July. And then the forest fires began, caused by lightning, runaway cooking fires, sparks kicked up from saw blades and the steel wheels of railroad cars, cinders pouring from engines. Fire after fire burst out: nearly a hundred major blazes were going strong by the end of July, along with thousands of smaller blazes.

The Big Blowup of 1910 | Britannica Blog

The weather during spring 1910 was nearly identical to this spring. Without the USHCN adjustments to temperature, March 1910 was just as warm as March 2012 in the US.

Global Warming In Fort Collins

The Fort Collins weather station has been one of the most stable stations on the planet. It hasn’t moved and has used the same equipment for its entire history. The station shows several degrees warming over the last 100 years.

broker (1201×601)

Photos of the station on the CSU web site show that it is well maintained. It must prove global warming!

fclwx_northwest.jpg (800×600)

What could possibly be wrong, other than the fact that the weather station is located in the middle of an asphalt bus station on the CSU campus?

The New Norm : Neurotic Global Warming BS

These people need psychological help.

Is the Colorado Wildfire the Future Norm?

The Colorado fires feature “a lot of the characteristics we would expect under climate change,” according to climate scientists.

Total BS. Fires don’t know anything about climate change. When it is hot and dry, the forests burn. Lodgepole Pine seeds can’t even germinate without a fire.

For the past thirty years, residents of tiny Laporte, Colo., near the Wyoming border have gathered inside Bob’s Coffee Shop to swap gossip over coffee and danishes near the dense pine forest of Lory State Park.

Total BS. LaPorte is a suburb of Fort Collins and is 25 miles from Wyoming. The CSU atmospheric sciences building is located almost in LaPorte. One of my kids went to junior high school there. The pine forest in Lory State Park is generally very thin. Much of the park is more like desert than forest. I ride my bike by there about once a week.

Most of Lory State Park doesn’t have any trees because of previous burns. Click below for a larger image to see the old burn scars.

But since the weekend, Bob’s has become a very different kind of social hub: a de facto refugee camp for homeowners fleeing what many here call the worst wildfire in decades.  From a booth just a mile and half from the fireline, Bob’s owner Chris McCullough in a phone interview on Monday afternoon described seeing forest ridges ablaze with arching orange flames, a sky blanketed in thick white smoke, and ash falling like snow. At other tables, locals shared updates about the fire’s spread and talked about what they were — and weren’t — able to save from their homes, which may — or may not — still be standing.  “It’s the fastest-growing, hottest-burning fire I’ve ever seen,” said longtime resident and Bob’s patron John Brewer, whose home was evacuated Saturday night. “I don’t know how we’re going to survive this one.”

Technology – Climate Desk – Is the Colorado Wildfire the Future Norm? – The Atlantic

Saturday and Sunday were hot and windy. The fire spread quickly for a couple of days, but has almost stopped moving now. It has burned about 40,000 acres – a little more than 1% of the three million acre fires which burned Montana and Idaho in 1910. This fire is much, much smaller than the 1871 fires in Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, New York, Connecticut, Ontario … etc.

During the previous two Junes (2010 and 2011) La Porte had a different problem. They nearly flooded from the record snow pack in the mountains. I took this video last June of a fawn stranded on an island which was about to disappear under the flood waters.

North Carolina Senate Passes Anti-Nutcase Bill – AP Immediately Lies About It

By Allen Reed
The Associated Press
© June 12, 2012

The North Carolina Senate has approved a bill that ignores scientists’ warnings of rising sea levels.

Senators approved the bill on a 34-to-11 vote Tuesday. The measure received little fanfare and no senators spoke in opposition to the measure.  The bill now goes back to the House for a vote.

HB 819 says that only the N.C. Coastal Resources Commission can calculate how fast the sea is rising for state governmental purposes and those calculations must be based on historic trends, which are much lower than the science panel’s projections.

A state-appointed science panel warned sea levels could rise by more than three feet by 2100 and threaten more than 2,000 square miles of coastal land.

N.C. Senate approves sea level calculation bill | HamptonRoads.com | PilotOnline.com

The IPCC forecast range is 7-24 inches of sea level rise. The 3 foot+ forecasts are from a few fringe lunatics who lack basic mathematics and science skills.

Kudos to North Carolina for standing up and fighting back.

David Appell : Mann Is An Excellent Scientist

Would you keep Mann or Jones as an employee?

Based on what I know, or what anyone has proven that I’m aware of, yes, certainly. They are excellent scientists with long track records of high quality work.

– David Appell June 12, 2012

Richard Muller had a different take.

You don’t do this in science….I now have a list of people who’s papers I won’t read any more.

Another Candidate For Clueless Journalist Of The Day

I thought David Appell had it sewn up when he declared that Nicholas Drapela deserved to be fired, and then admitted that he didn’t know why (or if) he was fired.

But along comes Dennis Bromage with one of the stupidest Polar Bear stories ever.

Looks bad, eh? The next picture shows that they are actually on about 50% concentration ice, ideal for hunting.

global warming causes ice sheet to break up

No Dennis, that is called summer, it happens every year. Then he goes on with this unbelievable tripe.

Dennis, who was only ten feet away from the bears on a boat, said: “Their main sources of food are out to sea.

Starving … break up of ice means family can’t reach food

“If forced ashore, they will starve for the summer because there is just nothing for them to eat.

Global warming is un-bear-able for polar bears stranded on ice

Let’s get this straight. The bears are right where they need to be to get food, and that is bad. If they weren’t there, that would also be bad. No matter where they are, that is bad.

“The ice is breaking up earlier and earlier every year. But the bears will cling on to the ice for as long as they can.”

Complete BS. In 1922, the water around Svalbard never froze all winter, and there weren’t any seals for the bears to eat. There is more ice there now than there was 90 years ago.

docs.lib.noaa.gov/rescue/mwr/050/mwr-050-11-0589a.pdf

Hudson Bay bears go 3-4 months every summer without ice, and their population is booming. It is time to stop lying about Polar Bears, who’s population is at record high numbers.
