Climate body warns of continued fish kill
AS the toll in the current fish kill in the provinces of Batangas and Pangasinan continues to mount, the government has warned that the phenomenon would continue as long as no significant gains are achieved in the campaign to reduce greenhouses gases in the atmosphere immediately.

Government environment experts have identified climate change as one of the factors that contributed in the massive fish kill in the two provinces.

“Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide, are trapping heat and prevent it from escaping to space. This is causing global warming and global warming triggers climate change,” Sering explained.

The year 2010 may have been the most extreme in terms of weather since the explosion of Indonesia’s Mount Tambora in 1816, when much of the world experienced reduced daylight and no summer, says one of the world’s most prominent meteorologists.

A combination of abnormal climatic phenomena resulted in the year being the hottest, wettest, and in many cases also the driest and coldest in recorded history, says Jeff Masters, co-founder of climate tracking website Weather Underground.

I lived in Los Alamos not long after WWII, and don’t remember seeing any evidence of a nuclear explosion. People usually notice things like that.

LOS ALAMOS, N.M. — Thousands of residents calmly fled the town that’s home to the Los Alamos nuclear laboratory as a rapidly-growing wildfire approached, sending up towering plumes of smoke, raining down ash and charring the fringes of the sprawling lab’s property.

The blaze that began Sunday already had destroyed an unspecified number of houses south of the town, which is home to some 12,000 residents. It also forced the closure of the pre-eminent U.S. nuclear lab while stirring memories of a devastating blaze more than a decade ago that destroyed hundreds of homes and buildings in the area.

On Monday afternoon, the flames were just across the road from the southern edge of the famed Los Alamos lab, where scientists developed and tested the first atomic bomb during World War II. The lab activated its emergency operations centre overnight and cut natural gas to some areas overnight as a precaution. Officials said all hazardous and radioactive materials were being protected.

A large fire is burning on Los Alamos National Labs property and the city is under mandatory evacuation orders.

Los Alamos, NM – Los Alamos County officials are reporting the fire is now threatening Los Alamos. They are ordering a mandatory evacuation which will begin and proceed in this order: Group 1: Western, Quemazon, Ponderosa; Group 2: North Community, Barranca Mesa, North Mesa; Group 3: East of Diamond and the remainder of the town site. White Rock is NOT being evacuated at this time. Residents in Los Alamos should NOT go to White Rock to stay in case it is later evacuated.

Residents are urged to prepare now to be ready to go when their Group is called using Reverse 911. The best sources of information about Group releases for the evacuation will continue to be through news outlets. The County is first evacuating those residents who are the closest to the immediate threat of fire. Residents should wait for the automated Reverse 911 phone call. Once called, proceed in an orderly fashion to police control points and follow any additional instructions to safely leave the County. National Guard and State Police will be assisting with the evacuation process.

The Supreme Court threw out a California law today banning violent video games sales to minors.

I was at E3 in LA two weeks ago, which is the big video game conference of the year. Lots of violent video games going on, and lots of computer nerds. Computer nerds are not killing people – gangs are.

As usual, California is attacking imaginary problems and avoiding dealing with any real issues.

David Barber, Canada’s Research Chair in Arctic System Science at the University of Manitoba, said the ice was melting at an extraordinarily fast rate. “We are almost out of multiyear sea ice in the northern hemisphere,” he said in a presentation in Parliament.
