Nobel Peace Prize Winner Says That Bombing People Isn’t Hostile

WASHINGTON — President Obama rejected the views of top lawyers at the Pentagon and the Justice Department when he decided that he had the legal authority to continue American military participation in the air war in Libya without Congressional authorization, according to officials familiar with internal administration deliberations.

Jeh C. Johnson, the Pentagon general counsel, and Caroline D. Krass, the acting head of the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel, had told the White House that they believed that the United States military’s activities in the NATO-led air war amounted to “hostilities.” Under the War Powers Resolution, that would have required Mr. Obama to terminate or scale back the mission after May 20.

Huff Post 2010 : Petermann Iceberg To Sink The Titanic Again

STOCKHOLM — An island of ice more than four times the size of Manhattan is drifting across the Arctic Ocean after breaking off from a glacier in Greenland.

Potentially in the path of this unstoppable giant are oil platforms and shipping lanes – and any collision could do untold damage. In a worst case scenario, large chunks could reach the heavily trafficked waters where another Greenland iceberg sank the Titanic in 1912.

It’s been a summer of near biblical climatic havoc across the planet, with wildfires, heat and smog in Russia and killer floods in Asia. But the moment the Petermann glacier cracked last week – creating the biggest Arctic ice island in half a century– may symbolize a warming world like no other.

Same size as 50 years ago. Must be due to global warming.

Global Warming To Destroy The Ski Industry

Global warming ‘could close half of Alpine ski resorts by 2050’
By Graham Tibbetts12:00AM GMT 03 Dec 2003

More than half of all ski resorts in the Alps could be forced out of business in the next 50 years by rising temperatures, according to research published yesterday.

Low-lying slopes such as Kitzbuhel in Austria and Oberstdorf in Germany may receive so little snow over the next 30 to 50 years that skiing, snowboarding and toboganning cease to be viable winter industries. The warning comes in a study by the University of Zurich for the United Nations Environment Programme.

Meanwhile, back in the real world….

KEYSTONE, Colo. — Arapahoe Basin officials say they will decide Saturday whether to keep the ski resort open until July 4.

The ski area on the Continental Divide has been running its lifts Friday through Sunday since ending daily ski operations June 5.

A-Basin has said it would consider offering weekend skiing through July 4 if the snow was still good. The resort hasn’t had any new snow in the last three days, but it still had a 62-inch base Monday.

Arapahoe Basin has offered skiing on July 4 four times, most recently in 1997.

Elsewhere, Snowbird in Utah and Mammoth, Alpine Meadows, Squaw Valley and Sugar Bowl in California are among ski areas offering skiing on the July 4 weekend. Timberline in Oregon regularly offers summer skiing.

Global Warming Made The West Habitable

This drought has afflicted the region since 1999. And it has made clear that the Colorado River is a badly strained resource. Water managers are getting a better idea of how much drier this region was for much of the past 1,000 years. The past century was actually unusually wet.

Seattle PI 2005 : Flat Earthers Deny That The Snake River Is Running Out Of Water

The debunkers of global warming — a Flat Earth Society of the 21st century — pooh-pooh talk that the climate is undergoing fundamental change.

They should have been in the audience yesterday.

“The fact is that the drought in the Upper Snake River basin is not only the worst on record, it appears to be the recurrence of a 500-year cycle,” Karl Dreher, director of the Idaho Department of Water Resources, told the conference.

Meanwhile, back in the real world.

The Bureau of Reclamation will increase flows below Palisades Dam from 15,000 cubic feet per second to 17,000 cfs Thursday night to slow the rate of fill of Palisades Reservoir.  Palisades Dam is located on the Snake River about 50 miles east of Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Snake River flows below Palisades Dam were reduced last week to lessen the effect of flood flows from the Henrys Fork on the Snake River downstream of the Henrys Fork confluence. Flood control space in Palisades Reservoir and Jackson Lake Dam remains slightly more than required, but the margin is shrinking.

“As snow melts and reservoir space fills, reservoir operations must respond to changes in the weather and watershed conditions,” said Mike Beus, Reclamation Water Operations Manager. “The unprecedented amount of snow that still remains this late in June will result in especially dynamic river flows.”
Flows are increasing to maintain a small margin of safety above the required flood control space, Beus explained.

NYT 2004 : Unnatural Drought Not As Bad As Natural Drought

A glimpse into the spectacularly disordered mind of warmists :

This drought still isn’t as dire as the one from 1900 to 1904. But everything in the West has changed since 1904. In fact, everything has changed since 1976, when two wet decades led to an almost unimaginable explosion of development and population across the region, an explosion that, in some places, is rapidly drawing down underground aquifers. In the short run, that pace of growth is unsustainable. In the long run, the question is whether the West can sustain even the growth it has managed so far.

While there is some comfort in learning that periodic droughts are a part of natural climate change, the fact is this drought is occurring at a time when climate change is being driven by unnatural global warming. Drought may be normal, and yet there may be nothing historically normal about this drought.
