Gavin has been telling us for years that the reason the northern oceans are warmer than the southern oceans is because there is more land in the Northern Hemisphere – which is causing global warming to happen faster there.

Now that the northern seas have turned cold, global warming theory is again sent down the disposal.

Sea surface temperatures are the most important factor when making seasonal forecasts. Temperatures off southern Greenland are now 3C below normal, which means that NASA will most certainly exclude 2011 from their Greenland melt literature.

The Greenland ice sheet is all but doomed to melt away to nothing, according to a new modelling study. If it does melt, global sea levels will rise by seven metres, flooding most of the world’s coastal regions.

Jonathan Gregory, a climatologist at the University of Reading, UK, says global warming could start runaway melting on Greenland within 50 years, and it will “probably be irreversible this side of a new ice age”

As the world warms, Greenland’s dwindling glaciers may actually slow in their retreat, according to new research.
Greenland is covered in an ice sheet big enough to raise the planet’s sea level by 6.6 meters (21.5 feet) were it to ever melt. Even as the world warms, though, most of the ice remains safe in the island’s cold interior, for now.

But since the year 2000 scientists have watched with alarm as its edges — huge glaciers that stream down out of the mountains and onto the surface of deep fjords — have been sliding into the ocean at ever-increasing rates.

Now new research by Andreas Vieli of Durham University in the United Kingdom and a team of scientists suggests a strange paradox: As the planet heats up through the middle of the 21st century, many of the glaciers may break up more slowly.

The team’s conclusion stems from running computer simulations of Helheim glacier, a massive tongue of ice spilling onto the sea in East Greenland.

New Jersey Governor Christie has switched from skeptic to warmist after taking the counsel of fringe alarmists. Here is one of them :

TOMS RIVER — Sea level will likely be a foot higher along New Jersey in 2050, and at the end of the century “Atlantic City’s going to see three feet,” geology professor Ken Miller of Rutgers University said at today’s conference on climate change and coastal hazards.

Ken Miller’s predictions are far outside the range of the IPCC estimates and measured data. The most extreme IPCC estimate is less than two feet this century, and their most likely estimate is less than one foot.

Europe’s Envisat satellite shows sea level rising at a rate of only three inches per century, and that sea level is lower now than when they started measuring eight years ago.

Tide gauges in New Jersey indicate less than a foot of “sea level rise” will occur this century and most of this is due to the land sinking rather than sea level rising.

Chris Christie has chosen to listen to viewpoints outside the realm of serious science for  basing policy.  If he wants to have a future in politics, he needs to show that this was a one-off mistake in judgment and correct it immediately.
