Norweigan Expert : Arctic Ice Free In 2008

Polar ice cap melting away in 2008 ?

The latest salvo comes courtesy of Xinhua, which reports that Olav Orheim, the head of the Norwegian International Polar Year Secretariat, is placing his money on this summer. Noting that its ice sheet had reached a historical low of 3m sq. km last summer – it covered around 7.5m sq. km as recently as 2000 – Orheim told Xinhua that “if Norway’s average temperature this year equals that in 2007, the ice cap in the Arctic will all melt away.” Barring this disaster, Orheim predicted that excess carbon dioxide emissions and higher average temperatures would unpredictably alter the region’s fragile ecosystems. On a separate note, he said that Asia would likely be hardest hit by rising sea levels, estimating that a one meter rise would affect “nearly 100 million people on an area of 800,000 square km in Asia and direct economic loss will amount to 400 billion U.S. dollars.”

Declining Spring Snow Cover – Deepest Snow Ever Recorded At Steamboat, Colorado

Friday, April 22, 2011

Snow was 15 feet deep Friday at the summit of Buffalo Pass

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The snow at the summit of Buffalo Pass never has been deeper than it was Friday morning.

Mike Gillespie, Colorado Snow Survey supervisor for the Natural Resources Conservation Service in Denver, confirmed that the snow depth at the Tower measuring site stood at 180 inches, or 15 feet, setting a record for measured snow depths there that go back to the mid-1960s. The previous record was the 175-inch snow depth recorded on April 25, 1978.

Labor Healed Australia’s Climate!

2007 : SYDNEY, Australia — Average temperatures in Sydney will rise by about 9 degrees during the next 65 years, with devastating consequences including 1,300 more heat-related deaths per year, according to a government study released Wednesday.

With Australia gripped by its worst drought on record, the issue of climate changehas emerged as a battleground in this year’s national elections.

Prime Minister John Howard has come under renewed criticism for not ratifying the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, making Australia the only major industrial nation other than the U.S. to reject the treaty that mandates lower emissions of global-warming greenhouse gases.

Howard did not comment on the study, which was commissioned by New South Wales, the state that includes Sydney, Australia’s largest city.

But New South Wales Premier Morris Iemma called the report “frightening reading” and said the federal government “can no longer put its head in the sand on this issue.”

Iemma is a member of the Labor Party, which is hoping to oust Howard’s conservative coalition in elections later this year.

Nobel Prize Winner : Arctic To Be Ice-Free In 2014

December 15, 2009

There are many kinds of truth. Al Gore was poleaxed by an inconvenient one yesterday.

The former US Vice-President, who became an unlikely figurehead for the green movement after narrating the Oscar-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth, became entangled in a new climate change “spin” row.

Mr Gore, speaking at the Copenhagen climate change summit, stated the latest research showed that the Arctic could be completely ice-free in five years.

In his speech, Mr Gore told the conference: “These figures are fresh. Some of the models suggest to Dr [Wieslav] Maslowski that there is a 75 per cent chance that the entire north polar ice cap, during the summer months, could be completely ice-free within five to seven years.”

Arctic To Be Ice Free By 2016

VIENNA, Austria — Scientists working with a new computer model designed to predict the fate of the Arctic ice cap unveiled their findings at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) general assembly Meeting in Vienna this week.

According to the updated predictions, based on a new computing model designed to replicate real-world interactions between the Arctic ocean, atmosphere and freshwater sources, Arctic summers could be ice-free within this decade.

The model predicts ice-free Arctic caps during the summer of 2016, although – depending on weather patterns – it may take until 2019 until the first summer when the Arctic will have lost its long-term ice cover.
