Trenberth Claims Floods Are Worse Now. Did He Actually Do Any Research?

Trenberth : Desperately Seeking Warming

KT: That’s a $64,000 question. In general, under global climate change, it’s suspected that the NAO becomes a little more positive. But in the last two years, it’s become quite negative, and so the speculation is about whether the negative phase is in any way related to the decrease in Arctic sea ice.

Global warming/NAO connection didn’t work. Let’s try explaining the cold as due to a missing ice cube in the Barents Sea.

M-M: Are these current weather events anomalous?

KT: One measure of how anomalous things are is whether you’re breaking records. There have been more record-breaking events than expected. In the U.S., for instance, the number of high temperature events has more than doubled [in the first decade of the 21st century]. What’s happened is that the ratio of record-breaking hot events to cold events is about 2 to 1.

M-M: At what point would you be concerned about the freak weather signaling something truly deleterious about our climate?

KT: I already am. Natural variability is going on all the time and the biggest effects are from the El Niño. Between May 2009 and May 2010, we had quite a strong El Niño. When the mini-global warming from El Niño is added on, we really start to break records when the heat starts coming out of the ocean, as in July of last year. There was record-breaking flooding in China and India and then in August in Pakistan. Last September was the wettest on record in Australia. Then there was record-breaking flooding in Queensland, Australia, from December 2010 into January 2011. Those events were associated with quite high sea surface temperatures in the Indian Ocean and were partly a consequence of the El Niño and the change in ocean circulation. The residual effects of the El Niño meant there was extra evaporation and extra moisture available for the monsoons — first in Asia and subsequently in Australia.

Do these guys ever actually check the historical records before claiming them?

M-M: Have these El Niños become more pronounced due to global warming?

KT: We have records of El Niño going back some 150 years, and there was a change in how it evolved starting somewhere around 1976. Today, the impacts of El Niño due to the floods and droughts around the world are certainly bigger. So while there are floods in South Asia and Australia, there are droughts in Africa and Peru and Equador. During El Niño, it tends to be wetter across the southern U.S. and drier in the north.

Pffftt. That is called the PDO shift, not the CO2 shift.

M-M: So, climate change really manifests itself with more weather extremes?

Einstein : “Whoever undertakes to set himself up as a judge of Truth and Knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods.”

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, February 18, 2002  The Alpine skiiers competing in the 2002 Winter Olympic Games are zooming downhill at the Snowbasin Ski Area over a firm base of snow 65 inches deep topped with packed powder.

But global warming threatens the success of future Winter Olympic Games, because snows will not occur reliably or pile up deeply enough to support them, according to the World Resources Institute.

Jonathan Lash, president of the Washington, DC based think tank, held a news conference in Salt Lake City today to warn the international athletes, coaches and officials gathered in Utah for the games of the consequences climate change may have for their sports.

Global warming threatens future Winter Olympic Games because it is resulting in less snow, and shorter and warmer winters, said Lash. Just as Salt Lake has done, we urge potential host cities to seriously consider the consequences of global warming in planning future Winter Olympic Games.

Record snowfall at California ski resorts

Seasonal snowfall records have been set at some California ski resorts, including Squaw Valley USA near the north shore of Lake Tahoe, Heavenly Mountain Resort on the lake’s south side and Mammoth Mountain, the sprawling eastern Sierra resort that attracts Southern California skiers and snowboarders.

More than 61 feet of snow has fallen in the 400-mile-long Sierra Nevada this season, second only to the 1950-51 season when 65 feet fell, according to California Department of Transportation records. Although spring has arrived, the Sierra typically gets some snow in April, bringing the prospect of an all-time record.

At Squaw Valley, home of the 1960 Winter Olympics, ski patrol guides had to create tunnels just to reach their warming huts, and avalanches broke out windows at two lift stations. Nearly 59 feet of snow has fallen there this winter, beating the old record by 29 inches.

Squaw is extending its season through Memorial Day, while Mammoth, with a peak elevation exceeding 11,000 feet, might remain open through Fourth of July.

1932 Winter Olympics – Too Warm, No Snow In January

http://news.google.com/newspapers

Eighty years later they have feet of snow in mid-April.

According to GISS records, nearby Wanakena, NY had its warmest January on record in 1932. 1933 was second warmest, followed by 1913 and 1950.

Repent Unbelievers!

Lest you confess your carbon sins and pay absolution taxes, the Earth shall see unbearable heat, cold, inundations of the sea, accompanied by pine beetle infestations, drought, famine, bleaching, plagues and the disappearance of glaciers by 2035. The likes of which hasn’t been seen since at least 1988.

The carbon gods shall smite the wicked unbelievers.

“poor nations watch in horror as we put 4 of every 10 bushels of corn into our gas tanks”

There is a need for a long, loud public debate, not only concerning the cause behind a warming climate, but a realistic look at the consequences of such change. The last warm period, which ended around 1200-1300 AD, was accompanied by the flourishing of mankind due to an abundance of food promoted by longer growing seasons.

Today, in a similar (but not yet as warm) period of warmth, we (the U.S.) are increasing corn and wheat production while poor nations, with starving populations – a major factor in the Middle East unrest – watch in horror as we put 4 of every 10 bushels of corn into our gas tanks. The key to those nations rising from poverty, indeed to economic prosperity worldwide, is cheap, abundant energy. And, they need it now. There is little proof that humans can accidentally, or deliberately, alter the earth’s climate. We do have the intellectual capacity to adapt, innovate and take advantage of the current climate. Man does not do well under cold climate conditions. We shouldn’t squander our chance to return to being the world’s “bread basket” by giving in to the” wealth-redistribution” agenda posed by the global warming crowd.
