Calving icebergs are very dramatic and play well on TV. They serve as clear examples of the global warming caused by man.

A ROMSEY-based campaign group plans to burn bibles at high-profile locations across central London in protest at Pope Benedict’s four-day state visit to Britain.

Founder of Fathers 4 Justice, Matt O’Connor, who lives in Romsey with wife, Nadine, said the group was planning “shock treatment” for the Catholic Church over what he described as its failure to stand up for families and fathers and the teachings in the Bible.

The US pastor who planned a mass burning of the Qur’an on the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks last year has been barred from entering the UK.

The Home Office ban means Florida-based pastor Terry Jones will not now attend a series of demonstrations organised by a far-right group against the expansion of Islam and the construction of mosques in the UK.

A Home Office spokesman said: “The government opposes extremism in all its forms which is why we have excluded pastor Terry Jones from the UK.

The North Pole has become an island for the first time in human history.

Startling satellite pictures taken three days ago show that melting ice has opened up the fabled North-West and North-East Passages – making it possible to sail around the Arctic ice cap.

The opening of the passages has been eagerly awaited by shipping companies which hope they will be able to cut thousands of miles off their routes.

But to climate change scientists it is yet another sign of the damage global warming is inflicting on the planet.

Mark Serreze, a sea ice specialist, described the images as an ‘historic event’ – but warned they added to fears that the Arctic icecap has entered a ‘death spiral’.

Scientists say that what was once covered in ice and snow is now land and water, which are darker and absorb more heat than the white ice. As a result, the amount of solar energy being reflected to the Earth’s upper atmosphere has decreased since the late 1970s.

Scientists add that other factors could be causing the decrease but that the decline is more than they had expected.

The study did not look at the Southern Hemisphere, where Antarctica has far more ice, is much colder and shows fewer signs of warming.

Is Darrell Issa planning to investigate climate science, or isn’t he?

Last September, before Republicans had even won the House and posted Issa atop the chamber’s main oversight committee, the California GOPer drafted a list of issues he believed should be investigated, and climate science made the cut. Issa specifically referred to a desire to investigate the so-called “ClimateGate” scandal and the scientific evidence underpinning climate regulations at the Environmental Protection Agency.

Shortly after the election, Issa downplayed his interest in the subject, citing “limited resources and limited time.”

Issa’s spokesman is vehemently denying any interest in the matter. From Politico’s Morning Energy today:

“As has already been stated numerous times, the Oversight and Government Reform Committee has no plans to investigate ‘Climate-Gate,'” Issa spokesman Kurt Bardella told POLITICO yesterday. “

The study also said that that the 2001-2010 decade was the warmest since the records started, with a temperature averaging 0.40 degrees Celsius (32.7 Fahrenheit) higher than that of the previous decade.

“We are still trying to examine the key reasons responsible for the drastic rise in temperatures and ways to control it,” the spokesman added.
