An online news service sponsored by the world’s premier scientific association unwittingly promoted a study making the false claim that catastrophic global warming would occur within nine years, the Guardian has learned.

The study, by an NGO based in Argentina, claimed the planet would warm by 2.4C by 2020 and projected dire consequences for global food supply. A press release for the Food Gap study was carried by EurekAlert!, the news service operated by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) , and the story was picked up by a number of international news organisations on Tuesday.

“This is happening much faster than we expected,” Liliana Hisas, executive director of the Universal Ecological Fund (UEF) and author of the study, said of her findings.

But, in an episode recalling criticism of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), when the UN climate science body wrongly claimed the Himalayan glaciers would melt away by 2035• , the UEF claims about rising temperatures over the next decade were unfounded.

Climate change is happening much faster than previously thought. But warming at such a rapid rate over the next decade is impossible, climate scientists said.

A few small, eccentric enclaves of nonbelievers are still convinced that the Earth is flat and that man never landed on the moon and that Elvis never died. Facts after facts, however, are exposing the argument that global warming is a “hoax” as a dangerous ploy to protect industry from cleaning up its act.

Two indisputably credible scientific organizations—NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration—delivered reports last week showing a continuing warming trend created in no small part by human-created gas emissions into the air.

One report has 2010 tying 2005 as the warmest on record.
Since scientists began record keeping in 1880, global temperatures have been above the 20th-century average for 34 consecutive years. For those whose homes and businesses have been wiped out by floods, this fact is not surprising. The year 2010 was the wettest on record in global averages.

The likes of U.S. Sen. James Inhofe, the scoffer-in-chief of climate change, continues his “hoax” propaganda, thus revealing a sick blindness to reality and ably serving industries that would rather let the planet be damaged than spend profits on remedies for gas emissions.

He and others in Congress who have sided with industry rather than the environment should hark to the warnings of Daniel Weiss, climate expert for the Center for American Progress: “To reject this latest evidence is like ignoring strange spots on a chest X-ray and continuing to smoke.”

Katter rubbishes Greens’ call for flood tax

The Member for Kennedy, Bob Katter, says the Greens’ link between the floods and coal mining is ridiculous.

Earlier this week, Greens Leader Bob Brown suggested the coal industry pay for part of the flood clean-up because they were somewhat responsible.

“We know that climate change is due to the burning of fossil fuels, primarily coal,” he said.

“I’ve called on the Australian Government to ensure that the tax on super profits on the coal industry to be levied in full to help the country pay for future flood, bushfire and drought disasters caused by climate change.”

But Mr Katter says Senator Brown’s argument is inconsistent.

“There is a problem that will arise in the oceans that we should be cognisant of,” he said.

“But Mr Brown, with all due respects, [has] the hide to say to the Australian people that it’s causing massive flooding, when not a year ago and for the last 10 years, they’ve been telling us that it’s been causing the drought on the Murray Darling.”

He says the comments are insensitive.

“I react with great anger,” he said.

“You can’t let people get away with that sort of hypocrisy and misrepresentations to the public of Australia.”

They tell us that the world is going to run out of food in ten years.

At the same time, they turn food into fuel because they are afraid of petroleum.

At the same time, they shut down half the farms in California because of imaginary concerns about a fish.

At the same time, they want massive taxes on fuel which will make food prices skyrocket.

In other words, they are either engaged in a concerted effort at genocide, or these people are complete lunatics. Or both.
