Lester Brown, founder of both the Worldwatch Institute and the Earth Policy Institute (EPI), where he currently serves as president, says he is certain that climate change-induced droughts, water shortages and flooding from heavy rains pose urgent danger to global food security.

The 76-year-old pioneer of American environmentalism and sustainable development has authored or co-authored over 50 books in his decades-long career — many of which warn about the risks of the overconsumption natural resources. His latest work, “World on the Edge,” details a planet teetering on the brink of “politically destabilizing food price rises.”

The world is creating a “food bubble,” he says, which could theoretically burst “at any time now.”

“The new reality is that the world is only one poor harvest away from chaos,” Brown told reporters on a conference call to launch his new book. If a heatwave on par with Russia’s struck the U.S. — the world’s largest grain exporter by far — it would trigger “chaos in world grain markets,” he said.

Need to ‘Stabilize Climate,’ Not Chase Techno-Fixes

Despite above normal temperatures in other places around the globe, maximum daytime temperatures in Southern California were between two and six degrees below normal during the April through October period, which is typically the warm half of the year. Overall temperatures in the region averaged about two degrees below normal.

Ocean temperatures between Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties also averaged about five to 10 degrees below normal according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

These temperatures were caused by an upper level trough that had maintained a significant marine influence across coastal and valley areas of southwestern California, according to the National Weather Service of Los Angeles and Oxnard.

“With ocean temperatures that are much colder than normal, the cold summer temperatures we observed, especially along the coast, are not surprising, given the strong influence the ocean has on our climate,” said James Miller, an assistant professor in the Department of Geography.

On our planet, carbon dioxide is the house. It always wins. Carbon dioxide heats a planet, no questions asked. There may be fluctuations here and there, but the long-term average says the world will warm.

If there is no change in the sea ice extent minimum, we both pay $1000.  If extent drops 2 million sq. km, then Bastardi pays $2000 and I pay zero.  If extent grows 2 million sq. km, then I pay 2k and Bastardi pays zero.  If extent grows 3 million sq. km, then I pay 3k and Bastardi pays zero.  Again, being very wrong is doubly costly.

If extent grows 3 million km^2, IBet = 3 million km^2. Using his formula, he pays $2500, not $3000 as he calculated.
