Guardian : Queensland Floods Are Not Caused By Global Warming
What changed since yesterday?

However, Vicki Pope explains that the record cold water is indicative of hot water:
But as a general point, said Prof Vicky Pope, head of climate change advice at the Met Office, a warmer world is a wetter world. “As the average global temperature increases one would expect the moisture content of the atmosphere to rise, due to more evaporation from the sea surface. For every 1C sea surface temperature rise, atmospheric moisture over the oceans increases by 6-8%. Also in general, as more energy and moisture is put into the atmosphere [by warming], the likelihood of storms, hurricanes and tornadoes increases.”

The Whack Jobs Are Coming Out Of The Woodwork
Plans by members of a Topeka church to picket Thursday outside services for the youngest victim, 9-year-old Christina-Taylor Green, prompted Arizona’s state House and Senate to unanimously pass emergency legislation to prohibit protesters within 300 feet of a burial or funeral.
Westboro Baptist Church planned to picket the girl’s funeral, as it has at military and other prominent funerals, to draw attention to its view that the deaths are God’s punishment for what the church describes as the nation’s tolerance of homosexuality.

Climate Models To Kill Lots Of Trees
Slower-growing trees. More severe fires. More bark beetle outbreaks. A lot more dead trees. And big changes in where various tree species are dominant in southwestern U.S. forests.
This is the worrisome forecast suggested for southwestern forests if temperature and aridity rise as projected, according to research published today by U.S. Geological Survey and other federal and university researchers in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
“Forests in the southwestern United States may experience all of these changes because they appear particularly sensitive to warming temperatures and increased dryness,” said USGS research ecologist Craig D. Allen, a co-author of the report. “The presence of forest vegetation in semi-arid regions, like the U.S. Southwest, starts with the availability of adequate moisture, which depends on both precipitation and temperature.”

The Aspen Groves Above Santa Fe
http://www.flickr.com/photos/savon19/3430799896/
The Sangre De Cristo Mountains of New Mexico have some of the world’s largest Aspen groves. They grew after massive forest fires burned hundreds of thousands or millions of acres at the end of the 19th century. I used to work as a ranger up there – it is incredible country.
They also used to have Bigtooth Maple trees, but the drought of the 1930s killed them off, and you now have to go further south or west to find them.

Romm : New Mexico Controls The Fate Of The Planet
Sadly for New Mexico, climate denial and failure to adopt sensible low-carbon policies risks multiple catastrophic consequences, which could well combine to depopulate the state in the second half of the century.
He also says that Antarctica is melting at minus 40 degrees.
The total volume of Antarctic ice has been declining.
