According to the latest report from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the near total ice melt in some parts of the Baltic, especially the gulfs of Bothnia and Riga, and the Åland archipelago, threatens the survival of the newborn seals there.
The Gulf of Bothnia, located between Sweden and Finland, is the northernmost region of the Baltic. The Gulf of Riga is found between Latvia and Estonia. The archipelago of Åland, part of Finland, is made up of 6,500 islands, also set between Sweden and Finland.
“Ringed seals give birth in mid-February and raise their pups in the first seven or eight weeks in caves formed on floating ice, while the pups put on enough fat to survive the icy ocean waters,” the WWF’s Baltic Sea biodiversity expert, Cathrin Münster, told Tierramérica.
“The lack of ice around the Åland islands and in the Gulf of Riga means that the seals born this winter don’t have that protection and surely will not survive,” she added.
With a weakened or insufficient ice field to sustain them, the seal pups are forced to swim in the frigid waters without the vital protection of a layer of fat, and they die of hypothermia and malnutrition.

This winter, the Baltic Sea is freezing over very early due to record cold temperatures. Once again, WWF demonstrates that they have no skill at forecasting climate.
I heard one of the cleverest men in Britain, master of an Oxbridge college, quite calmly say the other night: ‘The best hope for the monarchy is that Prince Charles dies before the Queen.’
This seemed a brutal observation from a kindly and temperate man, but he went on to justify it: ‘We spend our lives here educating a new generation to understand that rational behaviour requires us to reach conclusions and make decisions by examining evidence.
‘Yet now we have the heir to the throne demanding — not in a throwaway remark, but in an entire book to which he has just put his name — that we should reject science and evidence in favour of following our instincts. This is surely disturbing.’
11.48am: The Met Office is predicting this could be the coldest December on record, with a current average temperature of minus 0.7C – five degrees below the long-term average.

The bodybuilder-turned-actor-turned-politician says “with my celebrity power, and also my knowledge and experience,” he believes can make an impact. The Republican governor is especially interested in working on the country’s energy policy and would like to see leaders in both parties work together to reduce dependence on foreign oil, and rather than turn people off by “always talking about global warming.”
He adds that he can get attention because “people are very receptive when I talk about these things because I’m a Hummer driver … not a tree hugger.”
Maybe he can run his Hummers off wind power?

Alex Hill, the chief government adviser with the Met Office, told The Scotsman there was no future for skiing in Scotland because climate change would see winters become too warm for regular snowfall.
Mr Hill said: “Put it this way: I won’t be investing in the skiing industry.
“The amount of snow has been decreasing for the last 40 years, and there’s no reason why it’s going to stop now.”

Looks to me like West Virginia is not in danger of overheating any time soon.
1962 was the harshest winter on record in the UK, and was due to lack of CO2 and global cooling. A lot of parallels are being made for this winter, with some speculating that it may be as severe as the 1962 event.
The important distinction of course being that the harsh winter this year is due to all that extra heat being trapped by CO2. Every good follower of Jim and Al knows that widespread cold is a sure sign of extra heat in the climate system.
Furthermore, when climate scientists talk about warming, snow loss and decreasing snow extent, what they really mean is lots of excess snow at low latitudes.
