The Met Office Challenge

http://www.sodahead.com/

The Met Office has announced their intentions to bump 2010 up to #1. (I can’t imagine which US agency might have pressured them to do that.) But their challenge is more difficult than just pushing 1998 down. The also have a 2005 problem, as it appears that 2010 will also be cooler than 2005 – because temperatures have plummeted across the globe this month.

They will need a different 2005 strategy.

It is worth remembering that in 2000, GISS pushed 1998 up and 1934 down, to make 1998 the hottest year in the US.

NYT Blames Sediment Compaction On Global Warming

As sea levels rise, tidal flooding is increasingly disrupting life here and all along the East Coast, a development many climate scientists link to global warming.

But Norfolk is worse off. Situated just west of the mouth of Chesapeake Bay, it is bordered on three sides by water, including several rivers, like the Lafayette, that are actually long tidal streams that feed into the bay and eventually the ocean.

Like many other cities, Norfolk was built on filled-in marsh. Now that fill is settling and compacting. In addition, the city is in an area where significant natural sinking of land is occurring. The result is that Norfolk has experienced the highest relative increase in sea level on the East Coast — 14.5 inches since 1930, according to readings by the Sewells Point naval station here.

Explaining Met Office Communications

http://housesandholes.blogspot.com/

The flurry of news from The Met Office is confusing. In order to make it clear, I have summarized it below.

We originally thought that the past decade would warm quickly, but then natural variability caused by man-made pollution resulted in lower temperatures (as the models predicted.) But we have recently discovered that the natural man-made slow down in temperature is not as great as we originally didn’t predict.

Meanwhile, expect heavy snow and bitter cold again this week caused by Chinese power plants which pump out too much CO2. 2010 didn’t used to be, but is now the hottest year ever.

One Upwards Adjustment After Another

The surface temperature record is so polluted with upwards adjustments made by global warming activists in the US and the UK, that it is probably worthless at this point.

It is sort of like Rooney being given a penalty kick in the 87th minute against The Rangers. It is the only way he can score any more.

Hottest Year Ever : Coldest Autumn In At Least 20 Years

“In my 20 years as a forecaster I’ve not known this much cold weather so early. Usually we see this kind of weather in January or February.

Met Office : Natural Variability Caused Man Made Slowdown

The Met Office agrees that the rate of warming has slowed – but it maintains that is due to natural variability.

Global warming has slowed in the last decade, according to the Met Office, as the world pumps out so much pollution it is reflecting the sun’s rays and causing a cooling effect.

Met Office : Coal Fired Power Plants Cause Warming And Cooling (When Convenient)

During periods when they believe the Earth’s temperature is warming, they blame the warming on CO2 from burning coal. During periods when the Earth is not warming, they blame it on sulfates from burning coal.

One of the major factors is pollution over Asia, where the huge growth in coal-fired power stations mean aerosols like sulphur are being pumped into the air. This reflects sunlight, cooling the land surface temperature.

Met Office : Last Decade Warming Faster And Slower As Expected

The Met Office needs to coordinate their official disinformation campaign better.

The Guardian, Friday 26 November 2010 :
The world warmed more rapidly than previously thought over the past decade, according to a Met Office report published today

BBC, 25 November 2010 :
Dr Pope says the slowdown in temperature rise is consistent with projections from climate models. She also says she expects warming to increase in the next few years.
“The long-term warming trend is 0.16C,” she says. “In the last 10 years the rate decreased to between 0.05 and 0.13.

More Comedy From The Met Office

Dr Pope says the slowdown in temperature rise is consistent with projections from climate models. She also says she expects warming to increase in the next few years.

Sure it is.

“There are a number of things that are affecting short-term temperatures. A lot of the heat could be distributed to the deep oceans and we don’t know what’s going on there.

Must be all that hot water sinking. Can’t disagree about the part in bold though.
