“Methane is thought to contribute around one fifth of the greenhouse gas warming effect.”

Globally averaged atmospheric methane in 2009 was 1803 parts per billion

http://www.reportingclimatescience.com/

Wow! 1.8 ppm CH4 is causing 20% of the greenhouse effect. Those are powerful molecules.

Let’s do the math :

90% H2O and clouds
30% CO2
20% CH4

So far we have accounted for 140% of the greenhouse effect. Ain’t climate science grand?

Global Warming : Polar Bears To Fight With Grizzly Bears

Climate change brings bad news for polar bears

“What we found was striking,” Graham Slater, the lead author of the study said in a release. “The polar bear and brown bear can bite equally hard, but the polar bear’s skull is a much weaker structure.”

The weaker skull means polar bears are likely to lose out on food in competition with grizzlies, whose stronger skulls are better-suited to a plant-rich diet, Slater said.

Study author Blaire Van Valkenburgh said polar bears being forced south may mean lower birth weights, smaller and fewer litters, less reproductive success and fewer bears surviving to adulthood.

I haven’t seen any Polar Bears around here yet, but I will keep my eyes open.

GCM 571 : Final Exam Review

Class – here is what you need to know about climate models for your final exam next week.

  • They can’t model future solar activity
  • They can’t model future ocean cycles (ENSO/PDO/AMO etc.)
  • They can’t model clouds
  • They can’t model sea surface temperatures
  • They can’t model volcanoes
  • They can’t model pollution
  • They can’t model soot from fires
  • They can’t model changes to the Earth’s and Sun’s magnetic fields
  • They can’t model polar ice

But models can tell you what the temperature will be in 100 years within a tenth of a degree, and they can give you an accurate skiing forecast for the year 2090.

That is all you need to know.

Huge Solar Maximum By 2010 Or 2011

March 10, 2006:

This week researchers announced that a storm is coming–the most intense solar maximum in fifty years. The prediction comes from a team led by Mausumi Dikpati of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). “The next sunspot cycle will be 30% to 50% stronger than the previous one,” she says. If correct, the years ahead could produce a burst of solar activity second only to the historic Solar Max of 1958.

Like most experts in the field, Hathaway has confidence in the conveyor belt model and agrees with Dikpati that the next solar maximum should be a doozy. But he disagrees with one point. Dikpati’s forecast puts Solar Max at 2012. Hathaway believes it will arrive sooner, in 2010 or 2011.

“greater anticipated global warming”

Temperatures are plummeting across the globe, but the models are heating up. They probably sense a threat to their funding with the new Congress, and are responding by generating even more nonsensical scenarios.

Warmer Temperatures Mean Fewer Tornadoes

Another bit of alarmist nonsense gets flushed. Violent (F3-F5) tornadoes peaked during the ice age scare of the 1970s, and have been declining ever since. The graph below plots the ten year running mean in red.

“Unclear and Incoherent”

From The Korea Times, 18 months ago

04-08-2009

Although the new U.S. administration reportedly has yet to finalize its North Korea policy, its response is more than just puzzling. President Barack Obama handled what he termed the test-fire of a long-range missile like an emergency, stressing “violations must be punished.” Obama’s point man on North Korea, Stephen W. Bosworth, however, had already declared that “pressure is not the most productive line of approach.”
