Julienne Stroeve : Arctic Melt Since 1978 “cannot be easily explained away by natural variability”

Stroeve explains that highly reliable data on the extent of Arctic sea ice has been collected since 1978. From then until now, she has found clear evidence of a 30-year melting trend, which, she says, “cannot be easily explained away by natural variability.” But her work is even more notable for its findings about the speed of the change. Over this same 30 years, a relatively brief period, Stroeve has found that some 40 percent of the region’s summer (or more precisely, September) ice has melted.

I disagree. There is a clear relationship between PDO/ENSO and Arctic Ice.

We know that temperatures in Alaska are closely correlated with PDO/ENSO. Wouldn’t we expect western Arctic ice to be similarly affected?

Puffington Host : World’s Most Serious Problem Isn’t A “Real Problem”

We cannot expect that the public will support change without understanding the reasons for it. But we cannot browbeat our way to a broader understanding of the science behind climate change and the benefits of taking action. We need to start with the real problems people face in America today – from jobs and energy security to clean air and water — and work with them to find answers to those problems and the common challenge that faces all of us.

If it were a “real problem” all those ignorant people probably would have noticed?

NCDC Graph Confirms : 1975-2005 Warming Identical To 1910-1940 Warming

h/t to Joe Romm

NCDC shows that recent warming is identical to an earlier warming, when CO2 was much lower (310 ppm) and increasing slowly (3 ppm / decade.)

The graph below overlays the earlier warming (red) on the recent warming (blue.)

Sea Level Falling In Europe

http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/sltrends/sltrends.shtml

NOAA records fifty-five tide gauges in Europe. The average sea level “rise” is minus 1.08mm/year.

Only three locations out of fifty-five are rising faster than 2mm/year. Twenty three locations have falling sea level.

Cold Winters Due To Global Warming

CO2 is amazing stuff. The extra heat makes the air cold.

Press Release by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK)

11/16/2010

Global Warming could cool down temperatures in winter

The overall warming of the earth’s northern half could result in cold
winters. The shrinking of sea-ice in the eastern Arctic causes some regional
heating of the lower levels of air – which  may lead to strong anomalies in
atmospheric airstreams, triggering an overall cooling of the northern
continents, a study recently published in the Journal of Geophysical
Research shows. “These anomalies could triple the probability of cold winter
extremes in Europe and northern Asia,” says Vladimir Petoukhov, lead author
of the study and climate scientist at the Potsdam Institute for Climate
Impact Research. “Recent severe winters like last year’s or the one of
2005-06 do not conflict with the global warming picture, but rather
supplement it.”

UN Spreading More Junk Science

The planet is in danger of crossing a “tipping point” of irreversible damage to its atmosphere, climate, water and ecosystems unless governments can develop comprehensive strategies to promote growth and sustainability, warns a new report released on Thursday by an environmental advocacy branch of the United Nations.

Jane Barr, a geographer from Montreal who authored the North American chapter of the report, said climate change could exacerbate problems related to droughts and sufficient water availability for some parts of the continent, particularly in the U.S. midwest and in western Canadian provinces such as Alberta.

“Tipping points are very controversial of course. We don’t know when they will happen or if they will happen,” she said. “Scientists do know that there are potential tipping points and that’s something new, and that’s something that this report will highlight, and it might catch people’s eyes because there are dangers out there. That is certain.”
