Sea Level Challenge

Calling all reality deniers, who live inside computer models. Here is your chance to prove that sea level is rising rapidly.

See the rock island  inside the circle at The Cove Beach, La Jolla California? I am well acquainted with that rock because I go snorkeling there, and it has a pool on the near side full of brightly colored fish.

Your challenge is – find a modern photo where the water is higher than in that picture. The picture above was taken in 1870.

The animation below shows that nothing has changed since 1870.

Election Day Forecast

Looks like the Eastern blue states are going to be very blue. I’m hoping Colorado reverts to its natural red as well.

ENSO vs HadCrut Adjusted For Volcanoes

Reader “J” suggested that I try out HadCrut with volcanic adjustments. I used Dr. Hansen’s paper about volcanic effects as a guideline for the eruptions of El Chichón and Pinatubo. The green line above is the five year running mean of HadCrut (adjusted for volcanoes from 0-5 years after the eruption) and the red/blue is the five year running mean of ENSO.

PDO vs. HadCrut

HadCrut in black. Five year running mean of the PDO in blue/red.

When the PDO is dominantly positive, temperatures warm. When the PDO is negative, they don’t.

I wonder why Hansen/Tamino choose to cherry pick the start date of the mid-1970s as the beginning of their “period of modern warming?”

Relationship Between PDO and ENSO

The graph above plots the five year running mean of the PDO (turquoise line) on top of the five year running mean ENSO (red and blue.)  When the PDO is negative, La Niña dominates. When the PDO is positive, El Niño dominates.

Climate Science Denial Part 1

This is rich.

Every article I write using this NCAR (National Center For Atmospheric Research) graph from the 1970s, gets filled with comments that “no real climate scientists believed the globe was cooling.”

WTF? Any child with basic graph reading skills can see that they thought it was cooling.

Response To “Hot Topic”

I wrote an article for SPPI a couple of weeks ago titled “To a Geologist, “The Past is Key to the Future.” I got some good feedback from it, none more flattering than being compared to Lord Monckton by Hot Topic NZ

Unfortunately, they got a few other things wrong.

Point 1. Antarctic sea ice has been increasing steadily through the satellite record. No one disputes this.
