US Temperatures On The Decline

From listening to Romm, you would think that the US is having a very hot year. He has claimed heat from coast to coast.

But NOAA data shows Romm’s folly.

The map above is based on the NOAA year to date map. I split the country up into regions based on above normal (red,) normal (green,) and below normal (blue) temperatures. Normal is defined as within 1ºF of the mean temperature.

61% of the country has seen normal temperatures, 27% has seen above normal temperatures, and 13% has seen below normal temperatures. Hardly what would be called a hot year

According to NCDC, the year to date is actually the fourth coolest since 1998, with temperatures declining at a rate of nine degrees F per century.

Why Won’t They Let Me Referee Too?

Not my kid …….

I coach one of my kid’s soccer teams. The league won’t let me referee his games though. They have this bizarre theory that I might not be objective. It isn’t that they consider me to be dishonest, but rather that they think I might suffer from confirmation bias. I might preferentially look for things which suit my agenda.

Hansen plays the role of hockey team head coach, head cheerleader, head referee, head scorekeeper, team captain, prosecutor, judge and jury.

Mann : Influencing Policy Isn’t Fun Any More

For many years, Michael Mann appeared more than happy to be a key player in influencing government “climate policy.” He has changed his tune.

Stating that as a scientist, he should, in theory, have no stake in the elections at all, but based on statements that he cited in a recent Washington Post editorial, he essentially has no choice but to fight for his ability to continue his work without harassment. Mann, who is perhaps best known as the originator of the hockey stick graph that Al Gore made famous, described specific threats made against him and other climate scientists by two Congressmen and one state Attorney General should the Republicans prevail in November. Mann was implicated in the so-called “Climategate scandal” as the result of a number of questionable emails emanating from Britain’s East Anglia University

I personally would prefer to see Congress legislate gravity rather than the climate. They could end obesity and have exactly the same probability of success.

Hansen On The Ice Free Arctic

“We see a tipping point occurring right before our eyes,” Hansen told the AP before the luncheon. “The Arctic is the first tipping point and it’s occurring exactly the way we said it would.”

Hansen, echoing work by other scientists, said that in five to 10 years, the Arctic will be free of sea ice in the summer.

Mark Serreze On The 2013 Ice Free Arctic

Arctic summers ice-free ‘by 2013’

Professor Wieslaw Maslowski told an American Geophysical Union meeting that previous projections had underestimated the processes now driving ice loss….”In the end, it will just melt away quite suddenly.

“I think Wieslaw is probably a little aggressive in his projections, simply because the luck of the draw means natural variability can kick in to give you a few years in which the ice loss is a little less than you’ve had in previous years. But Wieslaw is a smart guy and it would not surprise me if his projections came out.”

Death Spiral : Arctic Ice At Record High In The DMI Database

The Danish Meteorological Institute has been tracking Arctic ice extent since 2005. They use the more meaningful 30% concentration standard, and as of today show 2010 as the highest on record for the date.

Ice extent is now more than a million km² (17,000 Manhattans, 318 Rhode Islands, or 10 United Kingdoms) higher than 2007. New ice is forming at a rate faster than one Manhattan every two minutes.

Here is a meaningless apples vs oranges statistic – the type which alarmists love to use.  In order to drive across Manhattan (13 miles) in two minutes, you would have to be traveling  390 miles per hour.

Holdren 1969 : The Science Is Settled – Everyone Starving Before The Year 2000

Turns out we have all been dead for over a decade. So what are we arguing about? Holdren wrote this in 1969.

World food production must double in the period 1965-2000 to stay even; it must triple if nutrition is to be brought up to minimum requirements. That there is insufficient additional, good quality agricultural land available in the world to meet these needs is so well documented (Borgstrom, 1965) that we will not belabor the point here.

Then he went into a long diatribe about how we are going to run out of water, energy, food, land – and that the heat from nuclear power plants is going to destroy the climate.
