Fort Collins Most Famous Family

THE tearful 911 call made by Mayumi and Richard Heene to report their son missing in a homemade flying saucer has been made public. An operator struggles to understand a distraught-sounding Mrs Heene as she tries to explain six-year-old Falcon is “in the air”. “We’ve gotta get my son,” she cries. The confused call is punctuated by long silences and the sound of Mrs Heene sobbing. The operator questions her about controls and tracking devices and asks: “Does he know how to work the flying saucer?”

Mr Heene’s voice also breaks as he takes over the call and explains more about the helium-filled balloon’s construction. We have it tethered. It wasn’t supposed to take off,” he said. He also asks if authorities can detect the electricity the balloon emits. “It emits a million volts on the outer skin.”

We are coming up on the one year anniversary of Balloon Boy! A day to make us locals proud. First installment of the anniversary celebration is this fine rap video.

Copenhagen Goals Met And Far Exceeded!

The Guardian reports :

Without locking the existing commitments in place, EU officials say it will be difficult to move the discussion forward to the more ambitious goals needed to achieve the Copenhagen target of keeping global warming within 2C by 2050.

What a happy day for all people who live on this planet!!! HadCrut shows that Earth is warming at a fairly steady rate of about 0.4C/century.

NHC Defines A New Type Of Hurricane

http://www.weatherstreet.com/hurricane/2010/Hurricane-Atlantic-2010.htm

After more than 750 days of no hurricanes making landfall in the US, the National Hurricane Center has defined a new type of storm, known as the “narrow escape.”

Hurricane Earl, which became a Category 4 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of storm intensity, came the closest by approaching to about 100 miles (160 km) off North Carolina and southern New England last month, Read said.

“That’s a relatively narrow escape if you look at it from the global perspective,” he said.

Corals Are Now Such Sensitive Creatures

Corals (which evolved during the Cambrian Era with temperatures 10C warmer and CO2 levels 20X higher) have recently become very sensitive creatures. We aren’t sure exactly when they became so emotional, but apparently it has been in the last 50 years.

In 1954, the US detonated a 15 megaton hydrogen bomb in the Bikini Atoll, raising water temperatures to 55,000 degrees and creating a crater 2km wide by 73m deep. 55,000 degrees is not quite as hot as Moscow, but it was still on the toasty side.

Break Out The Prozac

Normally they get hysterical about running out of fresh water, but today the hysteria du jour is that freshwater availability is increasing.

More rain causes droughts. I get it.

Polar Bears Learning Levitation

Now that the ice is almost gone in the Arctic, Polar bears are learning to adapt in a quite clever way – levitation. With no ice to stand on, they will have to hover over the water when hunting seals.

Arctic Amplification In Autumn

Julienne reminded me of something I meant to write about today. In recent years, we have been seeing this pattern.

http://ocean.dmi.dk/arctic/meant80n.uk.php

Arctic temperatures have been jumping up in September as the ice starts to freeze. The latent heat released when the water freezes, warms the air around it – transferring heat from the water to the air. Since there has been more open water in recent years, this has caused temperatures to go above average.
